Job summary

Beaufort Memorial Hospital is seeking a Maintenance Technician to provide comprehensive life safety and emergency management services for Beaufort Memorial and offsite facilities. The role focuses on fire protection, life safety systems, inspections, and regulatory compliance to ensure patient and staff safety across all properties.

The ideal candidate will have an associate or higher degree in science or safety, plus two years of emergency management experience, and a NIMS certification.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s or higher degree in science/environmental health & safety or related field with two years of emergency management experience preferred.
  • Two years of experience with Plant Services, daily routine, projects and emergency response preferred.

JOB SUMMARY

This position is to provide comprehensive institutional safety and emergency management services to Beaufort Memorial and facilities associated with the hospital.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
  • Associate’s or higher degree in science/environmental health & safety or related field plus two years of experience in emergency management or similar position, preferred
EXPERIENCE
  • Prefer 2 year’s experience in working closely with the Plant Services to understand daily routine, projects, and emergency response.
JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • To complete assigned duties, prioritize work orders / phone requests, and respond (along with necessary staff and contractors) to emergency issues throughout the hospital, and all properties owned or leased by Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Responsible to the Plant Services Director for assessing Beaufort Memorial buildings and environment of Offsite Locations for hazardous conditions and practices. Also responsible for, but not limited to, items listed below.

  • Coordinate strategy with the BMH EOC Supervisor regarding planning and maintenance of fire protection and life safety systems, including alarms, suppression systems, fire doors, egress corridors and smoke compartments.
  • Ensure alignment with The Joint Commission’s new Accreditation 360 Physical Environment (PE) standards effective January 1, 2026, including consolidated Environment of Care and Life Safety expectations.
  • Maintain compliance with NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Code, CMS Conditions of Participation and other regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee inspection, testing and maintenance of all life safety and physical environment systems, ensuring documentation meets TJC and CMS standards.
  • Lead hazard identification and risk assessment activities for the physical environment, developing and tracking corrective action plans.
  • Coordinate with BMH EOC Supervisor: all relevant agencies / departments, ECO, fire marshals, Infection Prevention, Security and Emergency Management teams to sustain readiness for internal and external surveys.
  • Prepare for and respond to all TJC, CMS and state inspections. Lead root cause analysis for deficiencies and drive corrective action.
  • Monitor and implement the 2026 TJC updates, including National Performance Goals and changes in the Physical Environment requirements pertaining to business occupancy regulations.
  • Develop and deliver training on life safety, egress procedures, fire drills and corridor safety for program staff and leaders.
  • Track and present performance metrics (inspection completion rates, deficiency closure times, infrastructure downtime) to the BMH EOC Committee.
  • Remain current on industry best practices, new technologies and regulatory trends affecting healthcare life safety programs.
  • Develop relationships with appropriate area and city agencies to assure emergency management procedures are coordinated.
  • Provide training, in conjunction with the BMH EOC Supervisor programs and perform emergency operation drills to prepare Beaufort Memorial department staff to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies that comply with Federal, State and other regulatory standards.
  • Develops thorough knowledge of Federal, State and local emergency preparedness system (e.g., NIMS and IC, and related initiatives), roles and resources; and ensure department compliance with emergency preparedness regulations and policies including but not limited to The Joint Commission.
  • Ensure all Hazard Vulnerability Analysis (HVA) reviews for each location are updated at least annually and the results are reported to the EOC Committee.
  • Identifies issues and documents action plans to improve response outcomes.
  • Developing department-specific emergency management plans.
  • Participates on a regional level, with the BMH EOC Supervisor, to ensure regional disaster meetings have Beaufort Memorial representation for planning/response purposes.
  • Ensures all departments and clinics actively participate in the Emergency Management Program, BMH drills, individual site drills and meet with managers to discuss results and opportunities for improvement
  • Coordinates visits to all BMH locations with the Plant Services Director.
  • Each visit will include any EOC compliance responsibilities that are due for completion at that time.
  • Minor maintenance will be completed during each visit if possible. Minor maintenance includes, but is not limited to: replace light bulbs, ballasts, ceiling tiles, repair / rebuild flush valves, unstop toilets, adjust door closers, hang pictures, patch / paint small drywall areas, tighten door hinges, etc. Other items may qualify as minor maintenance and will be discussed with the Plant Services Director before attempting repair or replacement.
  • If contractors or vendors are necessary for repair / replacement, the Plant Services Director will be consulted before moving forward.
  • At a minimum, each campus will receive a grounds inspection. The results will be reported to the Plant Services Director and the EOC Committee. Deficiency remediation should occur as quickly as possible. When quick resolution is not possible, the space or deficiency will be isolated until resolution is possible.
  • Conducts Environment of Care (hazard surveillance) rounding at least quarterly at all locations. Results and remediation efforts will be reported to the EOC Committee monthly.
