Job summary

City of Flagstaff is seeking a Library Specialist to connect patrons with resources, provide Outreach services, and table at events. You’ll assist with book selection, tech troubleshooting, and creating a welcoming environment for all community members.

The role includes lead responsibilities for outreach activities, collaboration with local shelters, and supporting various programming and displays within the library. A strong customer-service background is essential.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree or 60 completed credits; two years of relevant experience; one year of library experience required.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred; three years of library experience desirable.
  • Fluency in a language other than English (Diné, Hopi, and/or Spanish) is a plus.

  • Lead for the Books by Mail program: processing requests, materials, mailings, and staff direction.
  • Coordinate information table setups for outreach events and partner organizations.
  • Assist with marketing library services at information booths.
  • Attend meetings with local charities and report community needs to Library staff.
  • Present information about library services to local shelters.
  • Participate in employment programming and outreach.
  • Organize on- and off-site programming (e.g., senior book club).
  • Maintain display cases and manage special displays and calendars.

As a library specialist, you’ll play a key role in connecting patrons with library resources, providing Outreach services and tabling at events, and providing exceptional customer service. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • Tracks and reports statistics for program area.
  • Performs related duties, as assigned.
When assigned toOutreach
  • Serves as the lead for the Books by Mail program, including processing requests, preparing materials and mailings, communicating with patrons, and providing direction to other staff.
  • Coordinates requests from other organizations who would like to set up an information table in the library to connect with library users and discuss their resources and services.
  • Assists with marketing of library services and resources by staffing information booths at local events.
  • Attends meetings for local charities and service organizations, reporting back to Library staff about community needs and program opportunities.
  • Presents information about library services and resources to local shelters.
  • Participates in employment programming and outreach.
  • Organizes on and off-Site programming (e.g. a senior book club at a senior center).
  • Maintains display cases and manages some special displays (e.g. biannual quilt show); oversees the regular display calendar for both downtown display cases and staff book displays.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associates degree or 60 completed credits of college level coursework.
  • Two (2) years of relevant experience.
  • One (1) year of experience must be met through full-time working in a library.
  • A combination of relevant education and relevant experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. The required one (1) year of library work experience must be met through either through full-time library employment, part-time equivalent hours, or through a master's degree library/information science.
Desired Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in a related field.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible employment in the library field.
  • Knowledge of the local community and its resources.
  • Fluency in a language other than English, particularly Diné, Hopi, and/or Spanish.
  • Basic knowledge of and experience with collection development/maintenance.
Other Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
  • Must pass background, criminal history, and fingerprint check.
  • Basic understanding of communication and customer service principles. Demonstrates competent written and verbal communication.
