Job summary

Kansas City Public Library seeks a Public Safety Officer to patrol and secure library facilities, staff and patrons. The role is full-time and unarmed, with a pay of $20.28/hr plus benefits. Hours vary; positions may require weekends and travel between library locations.

Responsibilities include monitoring surveillance, issuing warnings, and coordinating with local authorities during emergencies. Strong English/Spanish skills preferred; licensing with KCPD expected or feasible soon.

Qualifications

• One year certificate from college or technical school; or 6 months related experience preferred.
• Licensed with KCPD or eligible to become licensed within 2 months of hire.
• Experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Previous verbal de-escalation training or obtained within the first 30 days of employment.
• A minimum of 1 year customer service experience.

Responsibilities

• Patrols Library-owned property inside and perimeters.
• Conducts monthly inspections of assigned locations.
• Creates incident reports to track safety concerns and incidents.
• Reviews surveillance footage related to incidents.
• Monitors doors, windows and gates for security.
• Notifies police and fire departments in emergencies.
• Enforces safety rules and escorts violators as needed.
• Activates/deactivates security alarms and responds to after-hours matters.
• Supports library safety at all locations as needed.
• Maintains confidentiality of patron information and policies.
