Job summary

Ann Arbor District Library in Ann Arbor, MI is seeking a Library Safety Assistant to patrol buildings, parking lots, and grounds, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for patrons and staff. The role requires on-site presence and includes evening or weekend shifts.

Under the Safety Lead, you monitor areas for trespass, enforce rules, respond to emergencies, and prepare incident reports. Training up to 60 hours is provided.

Qualifications

Hiring Range: $21.68 - $25.11/hr ($45,095 - $52,219/yr)

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Safety Lead, and the supervision of the Safety Lead, the Library Safety Assistant patrols the buildings, parking lots, and grounds to assure a safe and secure environment for patrons and staff.

This position includes working evening and/or weekend hours.

NOTE: This position requires up to 60 hours of paid, supervised training.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

include the following; other duties as assigned:

• Continually monitors the Library's buildings and grounds and enforces the Library's Rules of Behavior.
• Monitors staff areas for trespassers.
• Monitors the buildings to assure compliance with governmental regulations and reports any violations to the Safety Lead.
• Reports damage to the buildings, furnishings, or equipment.
• Maintains safety after hours for meetings, or when repair work is scheduled.
• Serves as a greeter to patrons entering the Library.
• Responds to emergencies and provides support as needed.
• Writes detailed incident reports.
• Meters outgoing mail, sorts incoming mail, ships packages, and performs other duties associated with the shipping and receiving office.
• Required to be on site for all work.
• Maintains a prompt and reliable attendance record.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications include:

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or six or more months of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. (Applicant must be 18 or older unless high school diploma or GED has been obtained.)
• Excellent public service attitude.
• Punctuality and dependability.
• Ability to understand and follow detailed instructions.
• Ability to communicate clearly and efficiently with patrons, visitors, staff, and vendors.
• Ability to assume responsibility and work well without close supervision after receiving instructions.
• Ability to work under stressful conditions, exercise good judgment, and act quickly in emergencies.
• Proficiency in the use of computers with a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Ability to bend, reach, walk, stand, climb stairs, and lift up to 40 lbs. without assistance.
