Job summary

McHenry Public Library District is seeking an on-site Building Maintenance & Custodian to maintain the interior and exterior of the library, parking lots, and grounds. The role supports a safe, secure, clean environment and collaborates with all departments to meet the library's mission.

The position requires a valid driver’s license, background check, physical exam, and drug/alcohol screening. Shift pattern includes evenings, weekends, and possible events.

Qualifications

• High School graduate or equivalent.
• Two (2) years of custodial and maintenance experience or an equivalent combination of technical training, experience, or education.
• Strong communication and listening skills.
• Knowledge of cleaning methods, cleaning chemicals, cleaning materials, tools, and equipment.
• Knowledge of and experience using building trades tools and equipment, including mowers, snow blowers, vacuums, floor cleaners, scissor lift, forklift, and hand tools utilized in building maintenance and the ability to safely operate them.
• Ability to complete basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry and painting tasks.
• Proper safety techniques and procedures.
• Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job.
• May function in a lead capacity with other custodial staff; assigning, monitoring, and directing the work of others on a project basis or monitor the work of outside vendors.
• Valid Driver’s License
• Proficient technology skills including: Microsoft Windows and Office applications, Google Suite applications, Internet, and the ability to adapt to changing technology.

Responsibilities

• Cleans all areas of the Library facility’s interior and exterior on a regular basis using approved chemicals, supplies, tools, and equipment.
• Sets up, arranges, and removes items for programs and meetings.
• Drives vehicles or equipment required to perform the duties of this role.
• Performs general groundskeeping including snow and ice removal, landscaping, trash collection.
• Performs building maintenance, repair, and alteration tasks including minor plumbing, carpentry, painting, and electrical repairs.
• Assembles shelving units, display cases, and other structures; performs routine preventive maintenance.
• Maintains custodial supplies inventory and submits requisitions as needed.
• Monitors building safety and security and reports hazards.
• Responds to facility emergencies promptly and follows safety procedures.
• Moves heavy furniture or equipment using manual methods or lifts; training provided.
