Job summary

The McHenry Public Library District is seeking an on-site Building Maintenance & Custodian to maintain the interior and exterior of the library buildings, parking lots, and grounds, ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for patrons and staff. The role requires evening and weekend shifts, including a Sunday day shift, with occasional Saturday events.

Responsibilities include minor repairs, setup for programs, and monitoring work requests.

Qualifications

• Two years of custodial and maintenance experience or equivalent training/education.
• Strong communication and listening skills.
• Knowledge of cleaning methods, chemicals, materials, tools and equipment.
• Ability to operate building trades tools and equipment (mowers, snow blowers, vacuums, floor cleaners, scissor lift, forklift).
• Ability to perform basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry and painting tasks.
• Valid driver's license and safeties.
• Proficiency with Windows/Office, Google Suite, Internet and adapting to new tech.

Job description

The McHenry Public Library District is seeking an on-site Building Maintenance & Custodian. This individual will maintain the interior and exterior of the library buildings, parking lots, and grounds, working closely with all departments to keep a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for patrons and staff. The salary for this position ranges between $19.09 and $23.86, depending on qualifications.

Schedule:

• This role combines evening and weekend shifts. Regular hours are Monday through Thursday, 5:15 pm to 9:15 pm, plus a Sunday day shift from 11:45 am to 3:45 pm, with occasional Saturday hours required during events.
• Paid vacation, sick/personal time off, and retirement (IMRF) benefits.

Employment with MPLD is contingent upon successful completion of a background check, physical examination, and drug/alcohol screening. This position also requires a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record check.

The responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

• Cleans all areas of the Library facility's interior and exterior (on a regular basis by following the Library's procedures, methods, and guidelines while utilizing approved chemicals, supplies, tools, and equipment.
• Sets up, arranges, and removes items such as tables, chairs, and podiums for programs and meetings.
• Routinely monitors the ticketing system, events calendar, internal messaging, and email for work requests.
• Receives deliveries and routes materials and packages to appropriate staff and departments.
• Performs general groundskeeping work, including snow removal, ice removal, and other duties to maintain the safety and appearance of the facility and grounds.
• Drives vehicles or equipment required to perform the duties of this role.
• Performs building maintenance, repair, and/or alteration projects, including

minor plumbing, carpentry, painting, and electrical repairs; assembles shelving units, display cases, and other structures or furniture.

Monitors building safety and security to identify potential hazards for both patrons and staff. Responds to facility emergencies (like water leaks or biohazard clean up) promptly.

Qualifications include:

• High School graduate or equivalent
• Two (2) years of custodial and maintenance experience or an equivalent combination of technical training, experience, or education
• Strong communication and listening skills
• Knowledge of cleaning methods, cleaning chemicals, cleaning materials, tools, and equipment
• Knowledge of and experience using building trades tools and equipment including mowers, snow blowers, vacuums, floor cleaners, scissor lift, forklift, and hand tools utilized in building maintenance and the ability to safely operate them.
• Ability to complete basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting tasks
• Proper safety techniques and procedures
• Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job
• May function in a lead capacity with other custodial staff; assigning, monitoring, and directing the work of others on a project basis or monitor the work of outside vendors.
• Valid Driver's License
• Proficient technology skills including: Microsoft Windows and Office applications, Google Suite applications, Internet, and the ability to adapt to changing technology.
