Job description

Responsibilities
  • Provide services to patrons by checking materials in and out, answering general reference questions, copying materials, placing holds on items, issuing new library cards, explaining library policies and procedures, and responding to telephone inquiries.
  • Search for missing items.
  • Collect payments for lost and/or damaged materials and overdue fines; issue receipts as requested.
  • Sort and shelve materials; examine shelves to ensure books are in proper order and straightened.
  • Assist patrons with utilizing online reference sources and databases.
  • May perform technical service duties such as entering data into the computer, checking in and processing magazines and newspapers, and conducting inventory.
  • Assist patrons with utilizing digital materials, such as Kanopy and Libby Books.
  • Prepare holiday and seasonal displays.
  • Place items on ‘patron suggestions’ list.
  • Provides reference assistance as requested; assists patrons with locating reference materials.
  • Contact patrons regarding requested materials on hold.
  • Check in materials from the book and video drop.
  • May open or close the library.
  • Perform general clerical duties such as typing and filing.
  • Perform general light maintenance and cleaning duties such as wiping down tables and chairs, cleaning service desk keyboards and phones, and cleaning public restrooms upon need.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge Requirements
  • Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal cataloging system.
  • Knowledge of library policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of collections and reference resources possessed by the library.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer, printer, calculator, typewriter, fax machine, laminator, and copier.
  • Skill in performing basic math.
  • Skill in dealing with the public.
  • Intermediate oral and written communication skills.
Physical Demands
  • Work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching and stooping.
  • Must be about to lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and/or stepstools, push and pull book carts, and lift and carry multiple books.
  • Must be able to read and discern computer screens and book labels.
  • Must be able to utilize equipment that requires a high degree of dexterity.
Supervisory and Management Responsibility
  • None.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Customer service experience in a public service preferred.
