Job description

Position Summary

The University of New Mexico College of University Libraries & Learning Sciences (UL&LS) seeks motivated and highly-engaged student employees interested in a challenging and dynamic customer service work environment. Library Assistants are the first point of contact most patrons have with the University Libraries system and handle most day-to-day duties associated with library operations.

Under direct supervision, Library Assistants work with University Libraries staff and students in a team environment to:

  1. Assist students, faculty, and community patrons with discovering and using library materials.
  2. Help patrons learn about and use library resources including course reserves, study rooms, computers, and printing.
  3. Open and/or close University Libraries facilities, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for UNM students and faculty.
  4. Shelve library materials and maintain well-organized and accessible collections.
  5. Participate in special projects as assigned.

Successful applicants will have opportunities for increasing independence and responsibility. Benefits include learning research skills, receiving guidance and mentoring from library staff, and developing professional skills such as communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Applicants must be able to work well in a team environment. All student employees may be required to work nights and/or weekends. Positions are employed on a term basis for the current or upcoming academic year. All library student employees must be able to perform physical activities such as shelving books.
