Job summary

Kansas City University is seeking a Staff Librarian to provide technical library support for catalogs, databases, and indexes, and to deliver professional library services to students, faculty and staff.

Essential duties include ensuring courteous help, promoting informed access, assisting with displays, and supporting loan activities. The role emphasizes teamwork, core values, and contributing to department goals while maintaining high service standards.

Job description

Job Type: Staff Job Description: Provides technical library support as it relates to library catalogs, databases, and indexes and by answering questions that require basic library science knowledge and consultation. Provides professional library services to students, faculty and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensures library customers are helped promptly and courteously
  • Promotes a courteous environment, informed access and independent learning
  • Assists with maintaining library displays
  • Organizes and maintains library materials and equipment
  • Provides high quality customer service
  • Coordinates and or assists with loan lending/barrowing activities
  • Provides reference services (i.e., answers reference questions and locates requested information, trains/assists students and faculty in locating/using print/electronic sources, performs on-line and internet searches as requested, assists with search strategies)
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including filling in to cover other staff duties during absences.
  • Represent department and the University favorably and in accordance with established Core Values and expectations
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed to meet the goals and objectives of the organization
  • Other administrative tasks (i.e., filing, preparing documentation)
  • Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems
  • Actively participate in team and University meetings
Qualifications
  • Knowledge obtained through Associate’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • One year library experience working in an automated library customer service environment.
  • Medical library experience preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of managing and navigating databases
  • Must have excellent organizational skills, be detail-oriented, and a self-starter
  • Exercise good judgment and discretion at all times
  • Ability to be flexible, and able to shift priorities as demands change
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to interact effectively and work efficiently with people at all levels in an organization
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills
