Job summary

Kansas City University is seeking a Library Assistant for the Joplin Campus to provide technical library support across catalogs, databases, and indexes. You will answer questions, assist students, faculty and staff, and deliver professional library services in a fast-paced environment.

Key duties include helping customers promptly, maintaining library materials, supporting loan activities, and offering reference services with search strategies.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or equivalent work experience; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • One year library experience in an automated library environment; Medical library experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of managing and navigating databases.
  • Excellent organizational skills, detail-oriented, and a self-starter.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to be flexible and shift priorities as demands change.
  • Ability to interact effectively with people at all levels in the organization.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties as assigned, including coverage for other staff duties.
  • Represents department and the University favorably and in accordance with core values.
  • Participates in department goals, objectives, and systems.
  • Actively participates in team and University meetings.

Job Description:

Provides technical library support as it relates to librarycatalogs, databases, and indexes and by answering questionsthatrequire basic library science knowledge and consultation. Providesprofessional library services to students, faculty and staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensures library customers are helped promptly andcourteously
  • Promotes a courteous environment, informed access andindependent learning
  • Assists with maintaining library displays
  • Organizes and maintains library materials and equipment
  • Provides high quality customer service
  • Coordinates and or assists with loan lending/barrowingactivities
  • Provides reference services (i.e., answers reference questionsand locates requested information, trains/assists students andfaculty in locating/using print/electronic sources, performson-line and internet searches as requested, assists with searchstrategies
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including filling in tocover other staff duties during absences.
  • Represent department and the University favorably and inaccordance with established Core Values and expectations
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed to meet the goalsand objectives of the organization
  • Other administrative tasks (i.e., filing, preparingdocumentation)
  • Participate in developing department goals, objectives, andsystems
  • Actively participate in team and University meetings
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge obtained through Associate's degree or equivalentwork experience. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • One year library experience working in an automated librarycustomer service environment. Medical library experiencepreferred
  • Strong working knowledge of managing and navigatingdatabases
  • Must have excellent organizational skills, be detail-oriented,and a self-starter
  • Exercise good judgment and discretion at all times
  • Ability to be flexible, and able to shift priorities as demandschange
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to interacteffectively and work efficiently with people at all levels in anorganization
