Job description

Eugene Public Library is recruiting a pool of interested candidates for temporary librarian duties, specifically On‑Call Librarians.

Overview

The library seeks collaborative, passionate librarians who want experience in a public library setting. On‑Call Librarians may work regular shifts when needed and support operations including planned and day‑of coverage.

Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with patrons, staff, and the community.
  • Plan, present, and evaluate dynamic community programs for all ages.
  • Select, manage, and maintain diverse collections.
  • Provide reference, reader’s advisory, and literacy services, including digital literacy support.
  • Deliver equity‑focused, trauma‑informed, people‑first customer service.
Location & Schedule

Work Location: Downtown Library (100 W 10th Ave, Eugene) with potential assignments at Bethel Branch (1990 Echo Hollow Road, Eugene) or Sheldon Branch (1566 Coburg Road, Eugene).

Schedule: Up to 20 hours per week; minimum 12 hours per month. Possible shifts include:

  • Sunday–Monday 9 am‑6 pm
  • Tuesday–Thursday 9 am‑8 pm
  • Friday–Saturday 9 am‑6 pm
Bilingual Pay Benefit

This position qualifies for up to an additional 5% of base salary for bilingual pay. Eligibility requires fluency in Spanish and completion of a language proficiency test administered by the City’s Employee Resource Center.

Worker Status

This posting establishes a temporary employment pool. When selected, applicants will be called for interviews based on experience, education, and assignment needs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Master of Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA‑accredited institution, or ability to obtain within two years of start date.
  • Experience: Demonstrated skills gained through work in a library or related public service, educational, or social service organization.
  • Background Check required.

  • Principles and practices of professional library work: reference, programming, core technology, emerging trends, databases, web tools, budget management, collection maintenance, and community outreach.
  • Equity‑focused, trauma‑informed customer service with knowledge of DEIA concepts.
  • Strong oral and written communication with diverse audiences.
  • Creative problem‑solving, negotiation, and stress management in a public‑facing environment.
  • Collaboration, innovation, flexibility, and cultural sensitivity; ability to work in a team.
  • Program development, coordination, and implementation tailored to patron and community needs.
  • Application of collection development standards and policies.
Selection Process

Applicants are screened based on relevant knowledge, experience, and abilities. The process may include questionnaires, skills tests, interviews, background investigations, and, for some positions, psychological evaluations, physical examinations, or drug testing.
