Job summary

City of Houston’s Houston Public Library seeks a Librarian II Assistant Manager at Freed-Montrose Neighborhood Library. The role leads staff, coordinates daily operations, and ensures high-quality customer service across the branch.

You will supervise teams, manage scheduling, support development, and participate in outreach while upholding library policies and safety protocols. Evening and weekend shifts are required.

Qualifications

• Requires MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program and 1 year library experience.
• Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree plus 18 hours toward an MLS from an ALA-accredited program and 2 years of library experience.
• MLS must be completed within two years of hire.

Responsibilities

• Provide day-to-day supervision and guidance to staff, fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture.
• Assist in scheduling, workload distribution, and real-time operational decisions.
• Coach staff, support professional development, and participate in performance feedback.
• Model organizational values, uphold policies and service standards.
• Respond to incidents, customer concerns, and facility issues; document and report as required.
• Support safety protocols and staff training for incidents.
• Build relationships with community members, partners, and stakeholders; participate in outreach.
• Represent the library in meetings and events.
• Oversee circulation, program logistics, reporting, scheduling, and room usage.
• Serve as assistant manager or in charge when manager is absent.
