Job description

The City of Avondale is accepting applications for Librarian II in the Parks, Recreation & Libraries Department.

Interviews, trains, supervises, and evaluates branch staff and volunteers. Assists the Branch Manager with overseeing facility operations, collection maintenance, and staff supervision. Oversees outreach to the community and mobile library operations. Takes a leadership role in programming for the library system, including supervising junior staff, monitoring program budgets, and long-range program planning. Provides library services, collection development, and cataloging. Takes a leadership role in marketing and social media for the library, including creating and posting content, and supervising and training junior staff on marketing needs. Performs research, customer assistance, programming, ordering, statistics compilation, deposit reconciliation, and enforcement of library policies. Librarian II assumes the responsibilities of the Librarian III (Branch Manager) in the Librarian III's absence.

Assists the Librarian III with:
  • Establishing, evaluating, and revising branch goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Implementing, monitoring, compiling, and reporting statistical summaries of strategic initiatives.
  • Monitoring the branch budget for staffing and supplies.
  • Preparing and conducting regular staff meetings.
  • Overseeing maintenance, safety, and security of the branch.
  • Oversee-ing programming and marketing.

Supervises, hires, trains, evaluates, reviews, and provides effective leadership to paraprofessional and clerical staff. Conducts regular meetings with staff, provides clarification regarding policies and customer issues, and prioritizes workload.

Develops, coordinates, advertises, and manages Library public programs. Oversees programming performed by direct reports and other staff as assigned. Works with staff at all library locations for long-range program planning and alignment of programming to the library and city strategic plans. Is responsible for the library programming budget.

Acts as a liaison to outside organizations and serves on standing and/or ad-hoc committees as assigned. With other Librarians II, oversees mobile library including scheduling visits, coordinating placement at fairs and events, ordering materials, and keeping statistics.

Orders, budgets, processes, and catalogs library materials and digital access to library materials for purchase based on established selection criteria and the needs of the community. Maintains vibrant and attractive collections by employing merchandising techniques, presenting engaging displays, and following adopted collection maintenance practices (weeding, running usage reports in the ILS, and other evolving library maintenance practices.)

Provides exceptional customer service at the front desk, resolves customer situations or complaints, and provides direction to staff on customer issues. Answers reference questions, performs reader advisory, and assists customers with digital devices, promoting all material types and products.

Orders supplies for the branch. Completes daily and weekly cash deposits as assigned. Submits work tickets for repairs and reviews building regularly for outages/repairs/cleanliness. Ensures that facilities are safe, welcoming, and healthy for staff and patrons.

Lead library presence in community outreach events, community program creation and implementation, grant writing, and collection, customer service and readers' advisory for all ages, presenting at local and national level meetings and events, and library instruction.

Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Science/Studies, Library Science, Communications, or in a related field required. Master's Degree in Library, Information Science (MLIS) preferred. An equivalent combination of education and job-related experience may be considered on a year-for-year basis
  • Three (3) years of progressive experience in library services and in library programming. Planning includes coordinating tasks, events, programs, as well as staff schedules, and preparing budgets.
  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Comprehend and make inferences from written material and verbal and/or written instructions. Produce written documents with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Bilingual speaking skills (Spanish) preferred.
