Job summary
Alamance County Library in Mebane, NC, is seeking an energetic librarian with experience in children0programming. You will plan and present programs for ages 0–18, coordinate teams, and manage youth materials purchases.
You will cultivate school and youth partnerships to promote reading and digital literacy, while supporting community engagement and customer service initiatives. Strong communication and multitasking are essential.

Job description
Within this role the candidate will promote ACPL’s values and mission while following established policies and procedures. The purpose of this position is to serve the informational, reference and reading needs of library patrons of all ages at ACPL and will be expected to perform any and all routine tasks necessary to the operation of the library system. This position works under the supervision of the Community Engagement Librarian.
- Planning, promoting, and presenting programming for children ages 0 to 18 at partner/outreach locations or in partnership with branches, upon request
- Coordinate the Children’s team to plan system-wide, age-appropriate learning programming, primarily Summer Reading
- Responsible for monthly purchasing of all youth materials in coordination with the Collection Development Librarian
- Assist, cultivate and maintain partnerships with local schools, childcare providers and other youth related organizations to promote reading and digital literacy
- Assist with the library’s community engagement efforts
- Identify library & literacy outreach opportunities and stay informed of activities and services for children and families within the community
- Increase skills and knowledge through professional reading workshops and webinars
- Regular public service duties include staffing all service desks
- Troubleshoot minor technology related issues, keeping management aware of issues
- Master of Library and Information Science or Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of library experience working in a children’s programming role is required
- Three (3) years’ experience working with children and customer service is required.
- Experience working with diverse populations in community-facing roles strongly preferred.
- Bilingual (Spanish) is preferred
- Flexibility in scheduling is required
- Strong customer service orientation with the ability to provide respectful, equitable assistance to patrons of all backgrounds.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, internet searching, and social media platforms.
- Ability to learn and apply library-specific technology, including ILS systems and electronic resources.
- Creativity in program planning, display design, and patron engagement.
- Strong problem-solving skills, sound judgment, and accountability.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; bend, reach, squat, and lift up to 40 lbs.
- Ability to push/pull loaded book carts and access materials on high and low shelves.
- Ability to effectively communicate with patrons and staff in a busy environment
Full-time employees are eligible for medical/health (Cigna Insurance) benefits upon the 1st of the month following 30 days of employment. Alamance County Government currently offers three plans of medical/pharmacy benefit options including 2 Standard PPO plans and a High-Deductible Health Plan with HSA.
Alamance County offers one dental insurance (Delta Dental) plan for FT employees at no cost. The plan, if elected, would be effective the first of the month following 30 days of FT employment.
A voluntary vision program (Superior Vision) is available to FT employees. The current PPO style plan allows employees to seek treatment and hardware from any vision care provider of their choice. The plan, if elected, would be effective the first of the month following 30 days of FT employment. Coverage must be elected within your first 30 days of FT employment or upon a qualifying event.
Alamance County Government provides a variety of voluntary health related benefits (Voya) to allow employees to purchase protection from what life may bring. Basic term life insurance is the amount of one times the annual salary (no greater than $70,000) is provided for all FT employees. Additional coverage is available for purchase through payroll deductions for employee and eligible dependents.
Membership in the NC Local Government Employees Retirement System (NCLGERS) is a requirement for all full-time and regular part‑time employees (working more than 1,000 hours annually). Employees contribute six percent (6%) of their annual compensation before it is taxed.
Annual Leave is accrued based on years of service. Employees can accrue from 10-25 days per year.
All County full time employees earn 12 days of sick leave per year.
Alamance County will observe the State of North Carolina Holiday Schedule.

Available to employees and spouses who are covered under the Alamance County Insurance Plan and their covered dependents, 18 years of age and older. Retired employees under age 65 are also eligible to use the health center. Depending on insurance coverage elected, care at the clinic ranges from free to a fair market value cost.
Treatment of injuries or illnesses such as flu, sinus Infection, pink eye, sprains, strains or fever. Monitor chronic conditions (Diabetes, Hypertension, Hyperlipidemia, Health Disease, Asthma, etc...) Assistance with finding a Primary Care Provider Health Education and Counseling Triage and referrals to specialists when appropriate. In support of this philosophy an Employee Fitness Center is available for all County employees to use at their convenience during non-work hours and is open 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM Monday-Sunday. This center includes weight training equipment, cardio equipment, a small aerobics room along with restrooms, changing room and lockers.
