Job summary

The Kentucky Department of Corrections, Division of Adult Institutions, seeks a Librarian to manage the Institution's library, catalog materials, provide reference services, and support inmate education.

Responsibilities include supervising inmate library staff, coordinating acquisitions, and maintaining legal materials; qualifications require a Bachelor's in library science and professional library experience; a Master's degree may substitute.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 21 semester hours in library science.
  • Two years of professional library experience.
  • A master's degree in library science will substitute for the education and experience.
  • Library experience may substitute education on a year-for-year basis in certain areas such as reference, cataloging, or materials selection.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in planning, direction, and supervision of clerical and paraprofessional personnel (inmates).
  • Supervises the inmate library on a daily basis and ensures the library program meets inmate needs standards.
  • Performs technical work acquiring, cataloging, and classifying books and periodicals; solicits donations.
  • Provides specialized reference, bibliographic, reader’s advisory, interlibrary loan, and research services.
  • Maintains current awareness of library materials in the fields.
  • Prepares in-house displays and activities.
  • Ensures outgoing legal mail is documented and handles legal tapes and CDs appropriately.

Description

The Kentucky Department of Corrections (DOC), Division of Adult Institutions operates correctional facilities that house Kentucky's adult inmate population. The mission of DOC is to protect the citizens of the Commonwealth and to provide a safe, secure and humane environment for staff and offenders in carrying out the mandates of the legislative and judicial processes; and, to provide opportunities for offenders to acquire skills which facilitate non-criminal behavior. The Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women is seeking a Librarian who will play a vital role in the mission through performing professional level library work within the Institution.

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To, The Following
  • Assists in the planning, direction, and supervision of the work of clerical and paraprofessional personnel (inmates).
  • Supervises the inmate library on a daily basis and ensure the library program meets inmate needs standards.
  • Performs technical work acquiring, cataloging, and classifying books and periodicals in addition to soliciting the donation of books, library materials, and equipment from the private sector and the State Department of Library.
  • Provides specialized reference, bibliographic, reads advisory, interlibrary loan and research services.
  • Maintains current awareness of library materials in the fields.
  • Prepares in-house displays and activities.
  • Provides specialized reference, reader’s advisory, and research services.
  • Ensures outgoing legal mail is appropriately documented.
  • Ensures proper handling and storage of legal tapes and CD’s and forwarding such items to other facilities if inmate is transferred from current facility.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: A bachelor's degree with a minimum of 21 semester hours in library science.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Two years of professional library experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: A master's degree in library science will substitute for the education and experience.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Library experience, which must include some professional level experience in a combination of at least three of the following areas will substitute for the education on a year-for-year basis: reference; cataloging and classification of materials; selection of materials; selection of instructional materials for children, adolescents, or adults; organization and/or administration; preparation and selection of materials for public relations/publicity purposes; and bookmobile operations. A master's degree in library science will substitute for the education and experience.

Typical work setting is an office/library.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
