Job summary

Commonwealth of Kentucky seeks a Librarian for the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women in Pewee Valley. The role requires directing an inmate library, supervising staff, and performing cataloging and interlibrary loan tasks to support inmate education and access to resources.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with 21 semester hours in library science.
  • Two years of professional library experience.
  • A master's degree will substitute for education and experience.
  • Year-for-year substitution allowed for certain combinations of experience vs. education.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise inmate library on a daily basis and ensure program meets inmate needs standards.
  • Perform technical work acquiring, cataloging, and classifying books and periodicals; solicit donations.
  • Provide specialized reference, bibliographic, readers advisory, interlibrary loan, and research services.
  • Maintain current awareness of library materials in the fields.
  • Prepare in-house displays and activities.
  • Ensure proper handling of legal mail and materials when inmates are transferred.

The Kentucky Department of Corrections (DOC), Division of Adult Institutions operates correctional facilitiesthat house Kentucky's adult inmate population.

The mission of DOC is to protect the citizens of the Commonwealth and to provide a safe, secure and humaneenvironment for staff and offenders in carrying out the mandates of the legislative and judicial processes;and, to provide opportunities for offenders to acquire skills which facilitate non-criminal behavior.

The Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women is seeking a Librarian who will play a vital role in themission through performing professional level library work within the Institution.

  • Assists in the planning, direction, and supervision of the work of clerical and paraprofessionalpersonnel (inmates).
  • Supervises the inmate library on a daily basis and ensure the library program meets inmate needsstandards.
  • Performs technical work acquiring, cataloging, and classifying books and periodicals in addition tosoliciting the donation of books, library materials, and equipment from the private sector and the StateDepartment of Library.
  • Provides specialized reference, bibliographic, reads advisory, interlibrary loan and research services.
  • Maintains current awareness of library materials in the fields.
  • Prepares in-house displays and activities.
  • Provides specialized reference, reader’s advisory, and research services.
  • Ensures outgoing legal mail is appropriately documented.
  • Ensures proper handling and storage of legal tapes and CD’s and forwarding such items to other facilitiesif inmate is transferred from current facility.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: A bachelor's degree with a minimum of 21 semester hours in library science.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Two years of professional library experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: A master's degree in library science will substitute for the education and experience.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Library experience, which must include some professional level experience in a combination of at least three of the following areas will substitute for the education on a year-for-year basis: reference; cataloging and classification of materials; selection of materials; selection of instructional materials for children, adolescents, or adults; organization and/or administration; preparation and selection of materials for public relations/publicity purposes; and bookmobile operations. A master's degree in library science will substitute for the education and experience.

Typical work setting is an office/library.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
