Job summary

Optomec in Albuquerque, New Mexico is seeking an experienced LENS Application Engineer to drive technical evaluations for sales processes. The ideal candidate will develop proof of concepts, present LENS technology at industry events, and analyze customer requirements for new products. A Master’s degree in a relevant field and 3-5 years of experience with laser-based processing systems are required. Job description

LENS Application Engineer

LENS Application Engineers are primarily responsible for driving and managing the technical evaluation aspects of the sales process. The applications engineer must synthesize requests from prospective customers to develop demonstrations and proof of concepts based on the LENS process and supported materials. The engineer leads hands‑on demonstrations of the printing process, culminating in the fabrication of functional test parts for the customer. The engineer also works with existing customers to help ensure their success; defines new products and enhancements to advance LENS technology; and leads or participates in R&D projects. Current projects include hybrid manufacturing, evaluation of CAM software for 5‑axis tool‑path generation, open‑atmosphere metal processing, and development of production recipes.

Major Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver customer‑specific proof of concept and product demonstrations.
  • Develop process “recipes” for common metals for use by commercial customers.
  • Present LENS Technology at conferences, seminars, or trade shows.
  • Respond to the technical elements of RFIs, RFQs and RFPs.
  • Analyze feasibility studies and define customer requirements to the product development team.
  • Travel throughout the sales territory (domestic and international) in support of product installations and training.
  • Provide technical input to the product roadmap(s).
Requirements
Education
  • Master’s degree in physical sciences or engineering, preferably in metallurgy or material processing.
  • Bachelor’s degree will be considered based on previous and future materials science application.
Experience
  • 3‑5+ years of experience with laser‑based processing material systems such as welding, powder bed, or directed energy deposition.
Preferred Knowledge
  • Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, etc.
  • Experience in Additive Manufacturing Industry a Plus.
Key Competencies
  • Self‑motivated with excellent working knowledge of laser based metal processes and technology, especially additive manufacturing technologies.
  • Must thrive in the dynamic atmosphere of a technical organization with a rapidly expanding customer base.
  • Familiar with various calibration and process control techniques such as powder and laser calibration equipment, closed-loop process controls and thermal imaging.
  • Ability to characterize microstructural and mechanical properties of additively produced materials and to determine processing methods to achieve application requirements.
  • Strong work ethic – driven to exceed customer expectations within delivery timeframe.
  • Possess strong professional communication skills in areas of proposal and technical report writing, verbal presentations, and small group consultation.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Ability to work well as a cross‑functional team member.
  • Knowledge of basic manufacturing processes.
Working Conditions
  • Will work in an office setting, manufacturing, lab, and warehouse location.
  • Goggles must be worn at all times in lab and designated areas.
  • Lab/warehouse environment contains metal powders, chemicals, etc.
Physical Requirements
  • Warehouse conditions as applicable.
  • Safety gear.
  • Use different modes of transportation.
