Distinguishing Features of Work
Join a dynamic legal team supporting the vital operations of the City of Wichita. As a Legal Secretary, you will provide professional legal and administrative support to attorneys in the Law Department. Your responsibilities include drafting, organizing legal correspondence, managing litigation calendars, and assisting with case file management using modern systems. This role requires discretion, attention to detail, understanding legal terminology, and maintaining confidentiality. You will report to the Chief Deputy City Attorney and contribute to the City's legal functions.
Workdays and Hours
Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.

Examples of Work Performed
- Dictation and transcription from notes.
- Answering calls, greeting visitors, attending meetings, and taking notes.
- Maintaining files concerning financial, personnel, payroll, or purchasing information.
- Scheduling appointments for supervisors and managing calendars.
- Typing reports, letters, forms, and other materials.
- Preparing pleadings, opinions, briefs, ordinances, and resolutions.
- May require operating a vehicle for work-related tasks.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Requirements of Work
- Knowledge of office practices, procedures, machines, business English, spelling, and arithmetic.
- Knowledge of legal terminology and forms.
- Ability to handle legal matters and use computers effectively.
- Ability to compose routine correspondence and develop office procedures.
- May require passing a shorthand test.
- Ability to transcribe from dictation or notes.
- Effective working relationships and clear communication skills.
- Possession of a valid Kansas driver's license may be required.
- No health or safety threats in the workplace.
Required Experience and Training
- 30 college credit hours in legal or paralegal studies plus one year of legal clerical work, or a technical certificate plus two years of such work.
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
- Passing scores on pre-employment assessments: Customer Service, Office Grammar and Spelling, Typing, Microsoft Word 2013.
Preferred Experience and Training
- One year of drafting legal documents under attorney supervision.
