Job summary

The Office of the District Attorney, Bronx County seeks a Legal Case Writer to support case evaluation and discovery. You will interview witnesses, analyze facts, and prepare legal affidavits for court proceedings.

Responsibilities include obtaining documents from NYPD and other agencies, preparing body cam/video for discovery, reviewing Desk Appearance Tickets, and assisting with unit tasks. JD required; residency not required; federal loan forgiveness programs may apply.

Job description

The Office of the District Attorney, Bronx County ("BXDA") is charged with the twin goals of ensuring public safety and striving for equal justice for the over 1.4 million members of the Bronx County community. By “Pursuing Justice with Integrity,” the BXDA places a focus on assistance for crime victims while simultaneously ensuring fairness to defendants. Moreover, the BXDA aims to balance the need to seek appropriate punishment for certain crimes while recognizing when punitive measures do not adequately advance justice. By recognizing these significant distinctions and acting accordingly, BXDA has established a standard of excellence in the representation of the Bronx community at large, which continues to grow stronger every day.

In furtherance of this mission, the BXDA seeks an experienced and enthusiastic Legal Case Writer.

Job Responsibilities

  • Interview witnesses (law enforcement and civilian witnesses) and address inquiries regarding case status, procedural issues, and criminal charges.
  • Analyze and assess factual scenarios (without taking notes) and prepare legal affidavits.
  • Obtain all necessary documents and from NYPD and other agencies to aid in case assessment and discovery.
  • Communicate and obtain any video/digital recordings like body cam video and prepare them for discovery.
  • Review and edit Desk Appearance Tickets prepared by DAT writers.
  • Assist with other unit tasks and perform all other duties as assigned.

Required Qualification

Juris Doctor Degree required.

COMMUNITY COORDINATOR - 56058

Minimum Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with general court procedures, services, and functions - Computer literacy, proficiency in typing, and knowledge of Microsoft Office - Ability to effectively and professionally communicate and interact with supervisors, colleagues, law enforcement, civilians, District Attorney, and court personnel, as well as other agencies - Excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail with the ability to handle a high volume of cases in a fast paced environment. - Ability to assess, draft, and type case synopsis and legal affidavits based upon facts presented. - Engage in witness contact and communication - Proficient in Microsoft Office, One Drive, and Adobe Pro - Ability to work days, nights, and weekends - Ability to take the initiative to implement systems that ensure work is done both accurately and efficiently
