The BIIA is a medium-sized state agency under the administration of three full-time Board Members. It is independent from the Department of Labor and Industries (L&I). The BIIA hears appeals from decisions made by L&I in several areas. The three principal types of appeals are:

  • Industrial insurance (workers' compensation).
  • Safety citations under the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA).
  • Employer Premiums (Tax Assessment and Classification).

You can read employee testimonials on our website at http://www.biia.wa.gov/Jobs.html.Reporting to the Mediation Services Administrator, this position provides senior-level judicial assistance to a minimum of two hearings judges. The position provides legal support with respect to the conduct of judicial proceedings and the issuance of written orders and communications, as well as proposed decisions in appeals arising primarily under the Industrial Insurance Act and the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Typing and proofing legal orders, forms, and correspondence.
  • Verifying proper citation of case law and statutes, reviewing quoted materials for accuracy, and providing substantive review of findings of fact and conclusions of law.
  • Processing Orders.
  • Maintaining electronic case files and databases.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Option 1: High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of experience in a legal environment in support of an attorney, administrative law judge(s), industrial insurance appeals judge(s), review judge(s) or equivalent.

Option 2: One year of experience as a Legal Assistant 2 (formerly Legal Secretary 1) in WA State Government.

Option 3: A two-year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal Studies or related field and two (2) years of legal office experience.

Option 4: A bachelor's degreeand two (2) years of legal office experience.

  • DUTY STATION: Remote work is optional. The successful candidate must reside in Washington State upon hire.
    • For those residing in King County: The official duty station will be the Renton office. This includes a 5% King County premium in addition to the posted salary.
    • For those residing outside of King County: The official duty station will be the Olympia office.
    • You may be required to attend in-person meetings or training classes.
  • This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees.
