Job Description:
The Lecturer creates, manages, and participates in a variety of learning environments and activities that provide opportunities for students to develop to their fullest potential and achieve their learning objectives. The Lecturer participates collaboratively and professionally with other faculty and staff to promote the general well-being of the department and the college and of the collective and individual interests of its staff and student body. The Lecturer supports and seeks to fulfill the guiding concepts for the College embodied in the philosophy, mission, values, and vision adopted by the Board of Education. This position description is in association with the Lecturer contract.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Instruction & Student Learning
- Teaches assigned courses as scheduled and assumes primaryresponsibility for and exercises oversight of the curriculum inconjunction with the Department’s policies, ensuring both the rigorof programs and the quality of instruction.
- Designs curriculum to foster talent in students while modelinginclusive teaching strategies.
- Considers individual differences of students in order to designand support a range of appropriate learning activities.
- Participates in the identification of students with academic orother needs and responds by utilizing an appropriate resource.
- Uses technology in a manner appropriate to the nature andobjectives of courses and programs and communicates clearly tostudents the expectations concerning the use of suchtechnology.
- Keeps accurate and appropriate records in accordance with theFaculty Handbook and departmental policies.
- Maintains attendance records, determines and submits gradestimely and in accordance with established policies and proceduresof the College, and communicates progress feedback as well as otherrelevant information to students throughout the semester.
- Creates and maintains accurate syllabi that incorporatesdepartmental, college, cross-college, and instructorrequirements.
- Participates in the selection of appropriate materials tosupport course curriculum in accordance with the College’sguidelines.
- Conducts classes punctually and in accordance with theprescribed meeting schedule.
- Employs and assists in the design and development ofappropriate assessment techniques to measure students’ performancein achieving course goals and objectives.
- Be a facilitator of learning in a virtual environment.
Student Engagement & Advisement
- Creates a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages activeand collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge,student and faculty interaction, and support for learners.
- Maintains posted office hours in accordance with departmentaland policies of the College.
- Uses technology to assist in communication with students.
- Encourages a sense of community among students for learningboth inside and outside the classroom.
- Advises potential or current students within the disciplineabout the program, career, or transfer options available to assistwith degree completion.
- Refers students to appropriate student and academic supportservices available at the College or in the community.
Continuous Improvement
- Promotes continual improvement as part of the cycle of teachingand learning by: assisting, as appropriate, in the maintenance ofinstructional materials and laboratory facilities; contributing, asappropriate, to the development, selection, and improvement ofinstructional materials, laboratories, and other instructionalfacilities; providing guidance in the development, maintenance, anddesign of course description, course outlines, and syllabi;recommending modifications to the curriculum and participating inthe design of new curricula.
- Completes all mandatory performance evaluation measures withinspecified time limits and participates in all required training bythe College.
- Shares best practices with colleagues in formal or informalsettings. Participates in instructional, departmental, orinstitutional research to improve educational effectiveness.
- Evaluates teaching and assessment practices to continueimproving them.
- Provides feedback, as appropriate, regarding the generaloperations of the department, division, and the College.
- Attends faculty meetings as called by the President, SeniorVice President of Academic Affairs, Dean or DepartmentChairperson.
Professional Development
- Employs student, administrative and self-appraisals toestablish goals and objectives for professional development andparticipates in professional development activities.
- Contributes, as appropriate, to the planning, evaluation,and/or presentation of college professional developmentprograms.
- Maintains required professional credentials, licensing, andcontinuing education hours as disciplinary standards dictate.

- Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect andinclusion for faculty, staff, students, and members of thecommunity.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s Degree from an accredited academic institution inMicrobiology or related field with equivalent microbiology graduatelevel coursework.
- Experience in the procedures of a teaching/learning laboratorysetting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D in Microbiology is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable abilityto gain access to work site(s).

About the ACF
The Annually Contracted Faculty (ACF) position at Columbus State is a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position. ACFs are typically placed on a one-year, two-semester contract that is renewable each year. CCP-ACFs (College Credit Plus) are typically placed on a two-year contract.
