Job summary

Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, seeks a Lecturer for the American Sign Language program. This three-year appointment requires teaching four in-person courses per semester (eight annually) and supporting student success through instruction, materials, and engagement.

The lecturer will develop syllabi, hold regular office hours, evaluate work, and collaborate with colleagues to advance program goals. A Master’s degree or higher and native or near-native ASL fluency are required.

Qualifications

• Master's degree, or higher, in Teaching ASL as a Foreign/Second Language, Education, Linguistics, Deaf Studies, Interpreting, or closely related field.

Job Description

The American Sign Language (ASL) Program seeks a Lecturer to teach four in‑person courses each semester (eight courses annually). This is a three‑year appointment with the possibility of renewal. The Lecturer teaches assigned courses on the Columbus campus and supports student success through effective instruction, course preparation, assessment, and academic engagement. Responsibilities include developing syllabi and instructional materials, holding regular office hours, evaluating student work, submitting grades by established deadlines, communicating with students, attending faculty meetings, and collaborating with colleagues to support program goals and student learning.

Performance Objectives

• Plan and organize instruction to maximize student learning.
• Teach assigned classes and hold office hours in accordance with university policy.
• Ensure curriculum implementation and course preparation align with department standards.
• Prepare, evaluate, and return homework, exams, and other student work in a timely manner to support student learning.
• Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grades in accordance with established university deadlines.
• Maintain the confidentiality of student information in compliance with FERPA.
• Attend faculty meetings and collaborate with colleagues.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required Qualifications

• Master's degree or higher in Teaching ASL as a Foreign/Second Language, Education, Linguistics, Deaf Studies, Interpreting, or a closely related field.
• Candidates without a master's degree are encouraged to apply; however, consideration will require additional approval from the Office of Academic Affairs.
• Native or near‑native fluency in American Sign Language (ASL).
• Demonstrated knowledge of ASL linguistics and the use of ASL in language instruction.
• Knowledge of Deaf culture and Deaf history.
• Broad experience and engagement within the Deaf community.
• Sensitivity to issues affecting the Deaf community.
• Demonstrated ability and commitment to work effectively as a collaborative member of a team.

Strongly Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of ASL pedagogy and effective language teaching practices.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching, preferably at the college or university level.

Additional Requirement

The successful candidate must be able to teach classes in person on the Columbus campus.

Desired Qualifications

• Experience teaching advanced ASL courses, such as ASL Linguistics, ASL Literature, Deaf Culture, Deaf History, Deaf Studies, and Deaf Education.
• Experience teaching introductory ASL courses, including ASL I, ASL II, and ASL III, with content areas such as ASL Grammar, Classifiers, and Deaf Culture.
• Experience using Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) or a comparable learning management platform.
