Job summary

The Chronicle Of Higher Education, Inc. is seeking a Learning Support Specialist to provide professional tutoring within Student Academic Support Services. You will support introductory courses, tutor one-on-one or in small groups, schedule sessions, and help with outreach and reporting.

The role emphasizes collaboration in a shared space, clear communication of subject matter, and a commitment to respectful, inclusive learning environments. Part-time, 20 hours weekly, hourly pay at $15.00.

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree, Academic or professional certification, or higher degree in academic field of expertise.
  • Six (6) months of teaching, tutoring, Supplemental Instruction experience, or equivalent related learning support experience.

Responsibilities

  • Takes tutoring sessions for introductory courses in the discipline area of expertise (in person, one-on-one or small groups).
  • Assists with daily tutoring center operations and maintains documentation of sessions.
  • Generates reports and maintains tutoring interactions records.
  • Proficiently uses tutoring/record-keeping software and assists with marketing and outreach activities.
  • Maintains knowledge of course material and multiple instructional methodologies; attends training.
  • Fosters a safe, respectful, welcoming environment for faculty, staff, students and community.

Job Summary

The Learning Support Specialist (LSS) supports the operation ofStudent Academic Support Services by providing professionaltutoring services and assisting with carrying out academic supportprograms and services. The LSS works with SAS/Tutoringadministration and staff to ensure efficient program operations,including scheduling, providing information, and taking part inoutreach activities as needed. The LSS tutors are in an area ofacademic credentials and expertise, usually for introductorycourses, in person, one‑on‑one or in small groups, to help studentsattain a deeper and more substantial command of the assignedsubject matter. The LSS must be able to work with others present ina shared space. The LSS must have a strong command of the subjectmatter and be able to communicate it effectively to students usinga variety of methods. Applications accepted in a variety of subjectareas; position filled as needs arise.

Tutoring
  • Supplements students’ understanding and command of the coursematerial for which students seek assistance, outside of class.
  • Tutors for introductory courses in the discipline area ofexpertise only.
  • Helps students develop and apply appropriate learning and studyskills.
  • Meets with students at appointed time.
  • Assists with training and mentoring Peer Learning SuccessLeaders as needed.
Administrative/Clerical Functions
  • Assists with daily operations of the Tutoring Center.
  • Maintains documentation of all tutoring sessions.
  • Generates reports for tutoring and maintains documentation ofdepartment tutoring interactions.
  • Proficiently uses and implements the College’s tutoring andrecord-keeping software.
  • Assists with SAS/Tutoring Services marketing and outreachactivities.
Continuous Learning
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of course material, as well asmultiple instructional methodologies, to accommodate variousstudent learning styles.
  • Attends tutor and staff training sessions.
Culture of Respect
  • Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect and welcomefor faculty, staff, students, and members of the community.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree, Academic or professional certification, or higher degree in academic field of expertise.
  • Six (6) months of teaching, tutoring, Supplemental Instructionexperience, or equivalent related learning support experience.
Additional Information
  • State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable abilityto gain access to work site(s).
