Job summary

Southwire Company offers a structured Summer Internship and Co-op program designed to bridge academic learning with practical, real-world manufacturing experience at a leading North American wire and cable producer.

Interns and co-ops will work on a variety of projects, receive mentorship from experienced leaders, and have the potential for full-time opportunities after graduation. The program spans 10–12 weeks for interns and 16–18 weeks for co-ops, with a clear path to impactful outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a degree in engineering, science, business, or related field
  • Strong planning and analytical skills
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work
  • Proven working experience in a team environment
  • Experience in systems thinking and process management
  • Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Desired experience with data analysis and Lean Six Sigma.

Responsibilities

  • Analysis of data for cycle time, OEE% and downtime causes
  • Participate in DHP process for the Industrial site
  • Support CI Manager to develop a Value Stream Map of the site for a Product line to be defined with the Materials Management Team
  • Create and communicate WI’s that are related to the improvements identified on the VSM workshop
  • Support implementation of improvements
  • Assist in conducting cost-benefit analyses of solutions

Job Description

Job Summary/Objective:
The purpose of Southwire’s College Programs is to help early career professionals bring together formal learning and

productive work to improve their ability to transition from school to work. Southwire provides interns and co-ops with

“real world” applications of their academic studies, helpful feedback and coaching, and consideration for employment

after graduation. Each student will have a variety of responsibilities and assigned projects that relate to their field of

study and be responsible for developing a timeline, progress updates, and final delivery in a senior leadership expo.

Note: All new interns and co-ops must begin in the summer rotation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Your intern assignment is generally 10-12 weeks, and co-op assignment is generally 16-18 weeks and will include an assigned project and opportunities to present your work.

Long Description

Project Summary

This position will support a “Mission Control project” to identify, analyze, and improve the primary bottleneck process within the wire manufacturing process flow at Industrial site.

The project focused on increasing throughput, reducing downtime, minimizing work-in-process inventory, and improving overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) through Lean Manufacturing methodologies and data-driven decision making.

The intern worked closely with production supervisors, operators, maintenance personnel, and Continuous Improvement Manager to evaluate current state operations and develop practical solutions to enhance manufacturing performance.
