Program runs during the summer rotation, typically 10–12 weeks for interns and 16–18 weeks for co-ops, beginning May 17 and ending August 6.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a college/university pursuing Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or equivalent.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Awareness of sustainability issues and trends.
  • Proven ability to work in a team.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Effective communication, both written and spoken.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Engineering by designing cable solution packages and creating SolidWorks drawings.
  • Evaluate assembly cells and suggest fixtures and jigs improvements for productivity, safety, and quality.
  • Design, source, and manage procurement for fixtures and jigs with vendor quotes and POs.
  • Develop an improved document coordination system to support Engineering Change Management.

Students will receive a project at the beginning of the summer and present it in our project expo at the end of the summer. Job Description

Job Summary/Objective:
The purpose of Southwire’s College Programs is to help early career professionals bring together formal learning and

productive work to improve their ability to transition from school to work. Southwire provides interns and co-ops with

“real world” applications of their academic studies, helpful feedback and coaching, and consideration for employment

after graduation. Each student will have a variety of responsibilities and assigned projects that relate to their field of

study and be responsible for developing a timeline, progress updates, and final delivery in a senior leadership expo.

Note: All new interns and co-ops must begin in the summer rotation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Your intern assignment is generally 10-12 weeks, and co-op assignment is generally 16-18 weeks and will include an assigned project and opportunities to present your work.

Long Description
Project Summary

Support the Engineering team in advancing the company's sustainability objectives under the Strong, Sustainable Southwire strategy by developing customer-specific cable solution packages, improving manufacturing processes, and enhancing engineering documentation systems. This project focuses on applying mechanical and industrial engineering principles to design and support production tooling, streamline engineering change management processes, and deliver efficient, customer-focused solutions.

Description of Responsibilities
  • Design and develop customer-requested cable solution packages, including detailed customer and assembly drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Evaluate assembly cell operations to identify opportunities for new or improved fixtures and jigs that enhance productivity, safety, and quality.
  • Design, source, and manage procurement activities for fixtures and jigs, including obtaining vendor quotations and preparing purchase requests.
  • Research industry best practices and develop an improved document coordination system to support Engineering Change Management processes
Qualifications and Experience Requirements
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work
  • Up-to-date awareness of sustainability issues, best practices, and trends
  • Proven working experience in a team environment
  • Experience in systems thinking and process management
  • Strong organization, planning and analytical skills
  • Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
