Lead Welder
Job Summary:
The Lead Welder is responsible for overseeing welding operations. This position requires advanced welding skills and leadership abilities to guide, mentor, and supervise a team of welders. The Lead Welder ensures that all welding tasks are completed according to quality standards, safety regulations, and project deadlines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and Supervise Team:
- Supervise and mentor a team of welders, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure high-quality workmanship.
- Assign daily tasks and welding projects, ensuring efficient use of resources and meeting production deadlines.
- Perform regular quality checks on team members' work to ensure compliance with safety standards and specifications.
- Welding Operations:
- Perform advanced welding tasks, including TIG, MIG, Stick, and Flux-Cored welding techniques.
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and welding symbols to determine welding requirements and specifications.
- Use welding equipment and tools (e.g., welders, cutters, grinders, etc.) safely and effectively.
- Quality Control and Safety Compliance:
- Inspect completed welds for defects and ensure proper quality control procedures are followed.
- Ensure all welding projects meet or exceed quality standards and customer specifications.
- Enforce strict safety protocols to maintain a safe work environment, ensuring team members are following proper safety guidelines and using PPE.
- Maintain accurate records of welding activities, including inspection reports, equipment maintenance logs, and safety compliance documentation.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Communicate effectively with project managers, engineers, and other team members to discuss project progress, challenges, and necessary adjustments.
- Work closely with the production team to meet project deadlines and maintain workflow efficiency.
- Provide input and suggestions for process improvements and best practices.
- Equipment Maintenance:
- Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of welding equipment and tools.
- Report any faulty equipment or tools and assist in arranging repairs or replacements as needed.
- Training and Development:
- Assist in training new welders and other team members on welding techniques, safety procedures, and equipment handling.
- Stay up to date on new welding technologies, techniques, and industry standards.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a formal welding program or apprenticeship preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of welding experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Technical Skills:
- Expertise in a variety of welding techniques, including TIG, MIG, Stick, and Flux-Cored welding.
- Must have advanced skills in both GMAW and GTAW welding processes
- Experience working with mild steels, SST and aluminum required
- Ability to ‘walk the cup’ / pipe-welding a big plus
- Strong understanding of blueprints, schematics, and welding symbols.
- Proficiency in using welding machines, hand tools, and measuring instruments.
- Leadership Skills:
- Ability to lead and motivate a team, providing mentorship and resolving conflicts as they arise.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills to prioritize tasks and manage workflow.
- Safety Knowledge:
- In-depth knowledge of welding safety practices and OSHA guidelines.
- Certification in welding (e.g., AWS, ASME) is preferred.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs) and work in physically demanding environments.
- Ability to work in various positions (standing, crouching, bending, etc.) and in challenging environments (e.g., extreme heat, confined spaces).
