Job summary

Washington State Department of Ecology is seeking a Lead Water Quality Engineer (Environmental Engineer 5) in the Water Quality Program, based in the Southwest Region Office in Lacey, WA. Telework is eligible with a requirement to be in the office at least two days per month.

The role focuses on planning, design, construction, permit issuance, and field oversight of wastewater and reclaimed water facilities, along with supporting grant/loan programs and mentoring staff.

Qualifications

• Registration as a Professional Engineer in the state of Washington or another state with equivalent requirements.
• Five (5) years of experience in environmental engineering.

Responsibilities

• Plan, design, and construct wastewater and reclaimed water systems in compliance with state requirements and good engineering practices.
• Provide regulatory oversight of operations at wastewater treatment and reuse facilities using diverse treatment processes.
• Manage financial assistance programs for clean water infrastructure projects and provide expertise on funding program elements.
• Mentor staff-level engineers and guide planning, design review, and permit development activities.
• Draft permit conditions and oversee permit issuance to ensure compliance with water quality standards.
• Conduct facility inspections and provide technical assistance on regulatory issues for communities and industries in the region.
