Job summary

City of Oakland is seeking a journey-level transportation engineer to contribute to planning, design, and operations of multi-modal transportation projects. The role focuses on safety, accessibility, mobility, and sustainability, with leadership responsibilities for staff and collaboration with city departments and external partners.

The selected candidate will supervise projects, develop traffic signal configurations, review studies, and present technical information at public meetings.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, transportation or a closely related field.
  • Three (3) years of professional engineering experience in transportation or traffic engineering.
  • Possession of a valid registration as a civil or traffic engineer in California or ability to obtain California registration by reciprocity.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional engineering transportation, traffic, and civil engineering work.
  • Prepare project documents for planning, design, construction, integration, deployment, and operations of multi-modal transportation projects to enhance safety, accessibility, mobility, and sustainability.
  • Supervise, prepare, and review transportation improvement plans, specifications, and cost estimates; design traffic signal configurations and operations; develop traffic-related geometric layouts; and prepare traffic control plans.
  • Review transportation studies, perform investigations, and submit recommendations regarding installation of traffic control devices.
  • Meet with and serve as liaison to City departments, other agencies, business and citizen groups; provide technical information; and present information at public meetings.
  • Participate in capital improvement projects; administer consultant and construction contracts; perform project inspections.
  • Provide lead direction and technical training to assigned technical and professional staff.
