Job summary

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a Traffic Design Engineer to lead a region’s traffic office, supervise engineers, and evaluate development projects affecting the state highway system.

The role focuses on delivering safe, reliable, and cost‑effective transportation solutions while upholding standards, specifications, and inclusive work practices within a collaborative environment.

Qualifications

• Engineering principles applied to transportation or construction environments.
• Ability to review designs, ensure accuracy and compliance with standards.
• Advanced skills in Windows-based systems and MS Office/SharePoint/Teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead reviews of traffic projects to ensure MUTCD compliance and project requirements.
• Coordinate multidisciplinary reviews with regional experts on signing, ITS, signals, and work zones.
• Review submittals and final plans to provide approval recommendations.
• Develop construction staging strategies and support safe work zone traffic control.
• Provide technical guidance to project teams, developers, and local agencies.
