Job summary

Johnson Controls, Inc. seeks a Principal Thermal Systems Engineer to lead end-to-end data center cooling system development from concept to production.

Based in New Freedom, PA, the role collaborates with global teams to deliver high-performance, cost-efficient thermal solutions and ensure certification and field readiness. Relocation support offered for qualified candidates. The role may involve mentoring junior engineers and driving SAP changes.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
• 4+ years with heat transfer analysis and thermodynamic cycle analysis.
• 4+ years in commercial HVAC industry; preferably chillers.
• Experience with released thermal products or systems.

Responsibilities

• Plan and execute complex thermal product development projects from concept through production launches.
• Serve as the primary technical interface between research/advanced development and design engineering.
• Generate layouts and system configurations balancing cost, performance, and reliability.
• Define specifications for complete thermal systems (thermal, controls, electrical).
• Own PDP deliverables (DFMEA, PFMEA, Control Plans) and lead validation tests.
• Lead process improvement initiatives across thermal product development domains.
• May supervise a team of 2-5 engineers and technicians.
• Resolve escalated production and field issues with root-cause analysis.
• Secure and maintain agency approvals (UL, CE/PED, ASME, regional standards).
