Job summary

K&A Power Group, a premier engineering and design firm, seeks a Lead Substation Engineer to join K&A Engineering in Binghamton and Rochester, NY. You will lead substation design projects, mentor engineers, and ensure compliance with IEEE standards across all phases.

The role blends office and site work, with Tue–Thu in-office collaboration. The ideal candidate has 8+ years in substation design, strong software skills (SKM/Etap/Easy Power), and a BS from an ABET-accredited program.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
• Eight (8) years of professional experience within substation design and engineering for electrical utilities.
• Familiarity with grounding studies and/or lightning protection is a plus.
• Experience with Greenfields and Brownfields.
• General knowledge and application of IEEE Standards as they pertain to substations.
• Experience with power analysis software (e.g., SKM, Etap, Easy Power).
• Proven experience in Substation Design including GA, equipment, cables, and protective layouts.
• Proficient in Microsoft Projects, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
• Hybrid Position (office Tue-Thu).

Responsibilities

• Project engineering performance and overseeing all phases from scoping to closeout.
• Perform standard and complex engineering analyses, designs and calculations.
• Lead and create new conceptual designs based on standards; oversee external detailed designers.
• Ensure designs meet codes and standards.
• Provide technical leadership on complex projects and mentor team members.
• Act as SME for the team and liaise with contractors on policy and best practices.
• Work independently with minimal supervision.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Lead Substation Engineer to join our team at K&A Engineering in Binghamton & Rochester, New York. • Project engineering performance and overseeing including all phases such as: scoping and budgeting, conceptual engineering, contract management and design, engineering design, construction and closeout.
• Perform standard and complex engineering analyses, designs and calculations.
• Responsible for leading and creating new conceptual designs based on Avangrid Standards and overseeing the work of external detailed designer ensuring consistency among all the operating companies.
• Ensure all engineering designs implemented by the company meet applicable company, local, state, and national codes and standards.
• Utilize knowledge to influence and guide department engineers.
• Provide technical leadership in most complex projects that have a wide impact on the business.
• Mentor develop and support team in technical skills.
• SME for team.
• Liaison/ direct contractors on company policy, standards and best practices.
• Work independently with little supervision

What we’re looking for:

• Proven experience in Substation Design should include general arrangement, electrical equipment, plans, elevation and section views, Equipment cable trays, cable design, conduit fill calcs, rigid bus calcs, grounding and conduit layouts, control schematics, wiring diagrams
• Proficient in Microsoft Projects, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
• Hybrid Position (reports to the office Tuesday-Thursday)
• Work Authorization Required

Pay Range $110,000-$125,000/annually
