Job summary

K2 Space is seeking a Senior Mechanisms Engineer to lead development of manufacturing systems for spacecraft mechanisms, including rotational actuators, separation mechanisms, gimbals, and reaction wheel assemblies. You will design for manufacturability, prototype builds, and scale production.

In the first six months you will develop manufacturing methods, define flows for mechanisms, build test articles, and provide DFX guidance across components and assemblies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, aerospace, or other relevant engineering discipline.
• 6+ years in high-volume, rapid production in manufacturing, integration, and/or design engineering.
• Demonstrated track record leading product development and/or process improvement initiatives.
• Strong understanding of NASA-STD-5017 and AIAA S-114 and familiarity with environmental qualification standards (SMC-S-016, GSFC-STD-7000).
• Strong understanding of how to set up and scale a manufacturing/production floor for first article builds.
• Deep understanding of mechanisms subassembly manufacturing technologies (rotational actuators, separation mechanisms, gimbals, reaction wheel assemblies).
• Strong understanding of DFX principles to guide design teams across mechanisms and assemblies.
• Strong understanding of GD&T and mechanical assembly drawings.

Responsibilities

• Lead design-for-excellence (DFX) guidance to design teams for mechanisms and assemblies.
• Lead development of innovative manufacturing systems for spacecraft mechanisms (rotational actuators, separation mechanisms, gimbals, reaction wheel assemblies).
• Create custom tools/processes to support manufacturing technologies and MES software.
• Demonstrate advanced manufacturing techniques on prototypes and improve manufacturability.
• Build test articles and support development/qualification campaigns and iterate on hardware/processes.
• Develop subassembly build flow and optimize production flow to meet takt times.
• Mentor junior manufacturing engineers and technicians on best practices.
• Partner with a team of engineers to lead R&D of novel manufacturing technologies.
