Job Description

This position requires strong leadership skills and the ability to foster a professional, patient-focused environment. The ideal candidate will uphold the highest standards of communication, honesty, and integrity, serving as a role model and representative of the UPMC Sleep Medicine Center.

Purpose:

A lead sleep technologist is a registered position with at least 5 years of clinical experience, working under the direct supervision of the department manager and medical director. The lead sleep technologist performs duties of a senior sleep technologist and, due to expanded responsibilities, provides oversight to all sleep center staff. They may assist in supervising daily operations of the sleep center as specified by the department manager.

Responsibilities:
  1. Utilize critical thinking and follow department policy and procedures under the direct supervision of the medical director or designee. Responsibilities include sleep study preparation, review of patient charts, testing orders, and proper patient identification. Conduct sleep study setup, including application of electrodes and sensors according to AASM recommendations, and explain testing procedures to patients. Perform all aspects of in-center and out-of-center sleep study acquisition with a focus on quality and patient care. Analyze and score sleep studies. Clean equipment and patient rooms. Perform routine equipment maintenance and manage lab supplies inventory and restocking.
  2. Demonstrate continued scoring competency with adequate completion of monthly AASM ISR requirements. Participate in organizational leadership training.
  3. Participate in department projects under the supervision of the manager and medical director, such as accreditation and department QA data collection, assisting with annual goals and staff evaluations, staff scheduling, and department meetings. Perform all duties in accordance with system-wide competencies and behaviors. Perform other duties as assigned.
