Job summary

Canto is hiring its first in-house legal leader to build and scale a modern legal function from the ground up. This role focuses on commercial contracting as a growth driver, reporting to the CFO, designing and operating an AI-enabled contracting function that speeds deals and reduces friction.

Within six months you’ll own end-to-end contracting, implement foundational systems and playbooks, and be the primary legal partner across Sales, Finance, and the executive team at a scaling SaaS company.

Qualifications

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated commercial judgment and pragmatism.
• Experience building scalable legal processes in a high-velocity environment.
• Interest in AI-enabled workflows and legal tech.

Responsibilities

• Drive Commercial Contracting & Sales Enablement.
• Negotiate and execute SaaS agreements (MSAs, subscriptions, DPAs, NDAs) within guardrails.
• Enforce company positions on non-standard terms and manage escalations.
• Train Sales to handle routine negotiations independently.
• Own and scale contracting operations.
• Lead end-to-end contracting for customer and vendor agreements with AI-enabled operations.
• Implement and manage a CLM system with templates and approval workflows.
• Leverage AI tools for contract review, risk flagging, and automation.
• Manage risk across vendor relationships, privacy, and governance.
• Oversee data privacy, including DPA negotiation and regulatory alignment (GDPR, CCPA).
• Collaborate with Security, Product, and leadership on AI and governance requirements.
• Lead the Legal Function and manage outside counsel relationships across US/Europe.
• Handle disputes and pre-litigation matters, advising on compliance programs.
