Job summary

Jobtailor in the United States seeks a Residential Counselor to provide direct support in small group settings or individual living arrangements. You will build independence skills, document plans, and coordinate with families, staff, and healthcare providers.

You will assist with daily living activities, transportation, safety, and community integration, while maintaining records and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years’ experience in a Residential Counselor role.
  • Demonstrated track record as an exceptional performer and team-player in the Residential Counselor role.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Current, valid US driver's license held for at least 6 months; driving is required.
  • Personal vehicle must be insured if used for work.
  • Must become CPR, First Aid, and Safety Care certified within 60 days of employment and MAC certified within 150 days; required certifications section states CPR, First Aid, and Safety Care within two weeks of hire.
  • Must successfully pass CORI and SORI reference, multi-state background, and driving record checks.
  • Knowledge of advocacy, empowerment, self-advocacy, participatory planning, crisis intervention, physical personal management, and household management techniques.
  • Knowledge of personal computer applications and equipment.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Outlook and an electronic health record.
  • Ability to multitask in a time-sensitive environment.
  • Organizational, participatory, collaborative, and teaching skills.
  • Ability to adapt and communicate with a variety of individuals using different communication styles.
  • Sensitivity to cultural, religious, racial, disability, and gender issues.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred
  • Valid US driver's license must be held for at least one year under the Driving Requirements section, creating a discrepancy with the six-month requirement above.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct support to individuals in residential settings and assist with activities of daily living.
  • Collaborate with families, friends, employers, and staff to build independence skills.
  • Develop, implement, and document treatment plans and clinical programs.
  • Provide rehabilitative and behavioral interventions, training, and support.
  • Assist with daily living activities including cooking, budgeting, and transportation.
  • Support community integration through recreational activities and outings.
  • Monitor residents’ physical and emotional status and report changes.
  • Maintain records, progress notes, and data in electronic health records.
  • Store, administer, document, and dispose of medications per policies.
  • Communicate with nurses, case managers, and other service providers.
  • Participate in trainings and staff meetings; orient new staff and ensure compliance.
  • Maintain site safety and upkeep including housekeeping and grounds.
  • Complete paperwork, logs, timesheets, schedules, and online records.
  • Maintain staff-to-consumer ratios and provide last-minute coverage.
  • Advocate for human rights and provide first aid during emergencies.

Job description

  • Provide direct support to people with behavioral conditions and intellectual and developmental disabilities in small group residential settings or individual living arrangements
  • Work with persons served, families, friends, employers, and support staff to build independence skills and improve quality of life
  • Develop, implement, and document treatment plans, ISP/IPs, and clinical programs
  • Provide rehabilitative and behavioral interventions, training, and support
  • Assist with activities of daily living, household chores, grocery shopping, meal planning, cooking, money management, appointments, and fire and safety procedures
  • Support community integration through recreational and social activities, outings, community travel, church activities, shopping, and other activities
  • Provide transportation as necessary
  • Assess residents’ physical and emotional status and report changes to the supervisor
  • Monitor residents’ funds as needed
  • Maintain records, progress notes, behavior and academic data, electronic health records, communication logs, incident documentation, and routine activity records
  • Store, administer, document, and dispose of medications according to MAC requirements, regulations, and company policy
  • Communicate with nurses, funding agencies, case managers, service providers, physicians, and other interested parties
  • Participate in mandated training and staff meetings; orient new staff and ensure regulatory compliance
  • Maintain program site safety and upkeep, including housekeeping, lawn mowing, snow shoveling, and garbage removal
  • Complete paperwork, logs, timesheets, schedules, and online data records
  • Maintain required staff-to-consumer ratios and provide last-minute coverage
  • Advocate for human rights and provide physical intervention or first aid during behavioral or medical emergencies
  • Report to the Disabled Persons Protections Commission as required
  • Maintain certifications, respond to work emails, follow administrative policies, and perform other related duties
