Job summary

Topeka Public Schools seeks a senior facilities technician to organize and direct the plumbing/HVAC department, ensuring district facilities operate without interruptions to education. Responsibilities include supervising staff, planning workflows, budgeting for major and minor projects, and maintaining records.

Requires Master Plumber or Master HVAC Technician or equivalent experience, 10+ years in the field, and a valid Kansas license.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• 10+ years experience in plumbing or HVAC in commercial/industrial settings; related training considered.
• Master Plumber or Master HVAC Technician certification or equivalent experience.
• Experience in plumbing, lawn/irrigation, pumps, boilers, and kitchen equipment repair.
• Knowledge of steam, water, natural gas distribution systems maintenance.
• Familiar with plumbing codes, OSHA requirements, and environmental protections.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Ability to supervise and manage staff, multi-task under pressure.
• Able to read plans and work from blueprints and specs.
• Valid Kansas driver’s license and clean driving record.
• Able to work in varied weather, heights, confined spaces.
• Strong communication, problem solving, and planning skills.

Responsibilities

• Receive daily assignments from Facilities Manager.
• Supervise and evaluate department staff performance.
• Enforce district policies with personnel under supervision.
• Provide or facilitate training for department personnel.
• Coordinate responses to emergencies relevant to the department.
• Plan and schedule workflow of department personnel.
• Estimate time, materials, and labor for department and contracted work.
• Maintain purchasing and work records.
• Assist with capital outlay budget for plumbing/HVAC projects.
• Direct and assist in installing and maintaining plumbing and HVAC systems.
• Ensure safe and efficient task execution.
• Ensure timely response to work requests.
• Maintain timesheets and inventory records.
• Direct and assist in coordinating preventive maintenance programs.
