Job Summary:

Under the direction of the physicians and clinical supervisor, assists ophthalmologists by performing clinical functions and preliminary exam workups. This role may administer eye exams, administer eye medications, instruct the patient in care and use of corrective lenses, or assist in, or prep, surgical procedures. There are multiple subspecialties in the resident’s clinic and procedures of every specialty are performed weekly. It is imperative to familiarize yourself with the specialty procedure(s) and each physician’s preference for procedure execution.

Job Description:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Complete patient work-ups including:

• Triages prior to starting the exam and rates the urgency of the patient’s chief complaint/ailment and communicates to the clinical supervisor or the scheduled physician on behalf of the patient, given the emergency walk-in nature of clinic.
• Maintains a stress-free work atmosphere to always emit a calm, understanding and caring demeanor to patients and their family/guests; regardless of patient volume to ensure a smooth clinic flow.
• Conducts tonometry test to measure intraocular pressure and test patient’s vision.
• Measures visual acuity, including near, distance, pinhole, or dynamic visual acuity using the appropriate tests.
• Takes and documents patient’s medical and surgical history as detailed as possible.
• Collects medical information from patients, family members, or other medical professionals and charts notes the patient might have brought.
• Administers topical ophthalmic or oral medications as directed by the physician(s) and administers non-intravenous medications as directed.
• Conducts visual field test to measure field of vision and test patient vision.
• Operates ophthalmic equipment, such as auto refractors, phoropters, slit lamp, autoclave.
• Takes anatomical or functional ocular measurements of the eye and surrounding tissue, such as axial length measurements.
• Measures the physical or physiological attributes of patients.
• Measures and records lens power using lensometers.
• Assists the physicians in performing ophthalmic procedures, preparation and clean up, including surgery.
• Maintains ophthalmic equipment and instruments, including documenting faulty or damaged equipment in need of repair, or replacing.
• Conducts ocular motility tests to measure function of Extraocular Muscle and deficiencies.
• Conducts binocular disparity tests to assess depth perception (example fly stereo test).
• Instructs patients in the care and use of contact lenses. Assists patients to insert or remove contact lenses.
• Assesses refractive conditions of eyes using retinoscopes.
• Operates diagnostic or therapeutic medical instruments, or equipment.
• Calls patients to inquire about their post-operative status, recovery, or to assist in patient concerns/inquires, as needed.

Resident clinic duties

• Stocks and cleans exam rooms as needed, this would include checking expiration dates on medications kept in rooms.
• Responsible with familiarizing themselves with the Henry Ford College syllabus and following training protocol set by management.
• Assists with education of new hires, students, and residents; Responsible for training and overseeing the following skills:

• Athena training
• History Taking
• Visual acuity
• Lensometry
• Confrontation fields
• Ocular motility
• Pupil assessment
• Tonometry
• Refraction
• Dilation drops

• Distributes and monitors the flow of work for resident clinic employees. Assists supervisor in assuring that assigned employees are provided with appropriate resources, materials, and methods. Provides recommendations to the manager for the most efficient utilization of assigned personnel. Relays work instruction from the supervisor.
• Monitors and maintains workflow for the department/service/satellite you are assigned. Tracks patients through the exam process. Recommends and implements changes as necessary to maintain an efficient clinical workflow and ensure a positive patient experience.
• Ensures harmonious workflow of patients and ensures adherence to policies and procedures; recommends changes as necessary to maintain efficient clinic, patient access, and desired patient experience.
• Working with supervisor, proactively accommodates for staffing and flow, to prevent potential bottlenecks within the clinic.
• Calibrates equipment on a weekly basis.
• Assists residents with sending prescriptions and returning phone calls.
• Assists supervisor with obtaining MRI and CT authorizations.
• Assists with obtaining prior authorizations for medications.
• Clinic has a wide variety of pathology and on occasion, there is a need for a compounded medication, or intravitreal antibiotic (kept on hand). If the need arises, technicians should be knowledgeable on this process, or how to order compounded medication(s).
• Must become proficient in ordering labs and following up with blood draw facility.
• Sterilizes medical equipment or instruments and cleans medical equipment or facilities, as needed.
• Look ahead at future schedules to determine any incorrectly scheduled appointments.
• Performs other duties assigned.

Education, Licensure/Certification, and Training:

• High school degree or GED required, associate’s degree preferred
• 5+ years working as a technician required
• Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Ophthalmic Technician (COT) preferred.

• Must be able to navigate Athena EMR and be able to work flexible work hours
• Must have the ability to maintain strict confidentiality, clinic has a wide variety of patients from all demographics
• Ability to use computer software programs and systems

Safety Requirements:

• Compliance with Department Health and Safety policies and procedures
• Mandatory annual flu shot based on department guidelines (except unless medically exempt with written documentation).

Working Conditions/Schedule:

• 40-hour work week, hours and days to be determined by the business needs of the department. Additional hours may be required
