Job summary

Via Separations, a Boston-area startup, seeks a Lead Mechanical Technician for the Internal Systems group in Watertown, MA. This on-site role leads the assembly, fabrication, and build-out of internal test equipment and pilot support systems, reading engineering drawings, ordering materials, and ensuring safety around hazardous liquids.

Qualifications

• 10+ years hands-on experience assembling, fabricating, and maintaining mechanical and piping systems.
• Ability to read and work directly from engineering drawings, P&IDs, and specifications.
• Experience using hand tools and shop equipment (cut-off saws, pipe threading).
• Comfortable around hazardous liquids and gases and following safety protocols.
• Experience ordering or specifying fabrication/maintenance material.
• Strong troubleshooting across mechanical, piping, and basic electrical/controls systems.
• Knowledge of RO and high-pressure system components and safe handling.
• Ability to lead tasks and provide direction on builds or maintenance.
• Able to work independently with sound task management.

Responsibilities

• Assemble and fabricate internal test equipment and skids, including pumps, piping, valves, instrumentation, controls, and wiring.
• Read and interpret drawings and specifications to plan builds.
• Order and track materials ensuring timely delivery.
• Use hand tools and shop equipment to fabricate piping and structural components.
• Lead build sequencing and assign tasks; ensure quality and safety.
• Support shipping/receiving and crate/build for freight.
• Coordinate with electricians, plumbers, and HVAC contractors for lab equipment.
• Maintain and troubleshoot existing test skids and systems.
• Identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
• Mentor colleagues and enforce shop safety standards.
