Job summary

King County is seeking a Journeyman Lead Mechanic to oversee maintenance of light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles and equipment within the Solid Waste Division. You will lead hands‑on repair work, manage work orders, and communicate with staff, vendors, and customers to ensure safe, reliable operations.

The role requires diagnosing and repairing diverse fleet equipment, developing team skills, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

• Journeyman Mechanic with 4 years preferred in heavy‑duty truck and equipment repair, plus a two‑year diesel/automotive program or apprenticeship.
• Lead Mechanic with 1–2 years preferred.
• Commitment to workplace safety and standard maintenance policies.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Faster maintenance systems.
• Experience with diagnostic software like Cummins INSITE, CAT ET, John Deere Service Advisor Pro, and related tools.
• Ability to read manuals, schematics, and diagnostic data to troubleshoot.
• Strong verbal and written communication for team collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate, and oversee daily activities of mechanics via shop workflows.
• Provide technical leadership and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and complex equipment issues.
• Diagnose, repair a wide range of vehicles and equipment including diesel and electric powertrains.
• Generate and maintain accurate work orders and service records.
