Job summary

The City of Davenport is seeking a skilled automotive mechanic to diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy and specialized equipment. The role includes leading a repair shop team and ensuring repairs meet high safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities cover diagnosing diesel and gasoline engines, overhauling transmissions, welding, fabricating parts, and maintaining records. Requires ASE Master certification within six months, valid CDL with air brake endorsement, and a clean background.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Three years of experience as a skilled full performance mechanic, including one year in the repair and maintenance of heavy-duty diesel and construction equipment.
• ASE Master certified within six months of hire and maintained thereafter.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license, obtain a CDL with air brake endorsement within 60 days, and the city will provide CDL training upon hire.
• Must pass a physical and background check; CDL personnel are subject to the Federal Drug & Alcohol Program.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose mechanical defects in diesel and gasoline equipment including trucks, tractors, loaders, cranes and graders.
• Perform major and minor repairs, adjust brakes and clutches, overhaul controls and transmissions.
• Fit parts, oil, water, fuel pumps, carburetors, governors, transmissions and brakes; inspect and replace worn components.
• Weld, fabricate and rebuild parts; lay out and fabricate units for rebuilding major components.
• Lead workers, assign work, supervise subordinates and maintain repair records.
