Job summary

YMCA of Central Maryland, Inc. seeks a Head Lifeguard to lead lifeguards and swim instructors, oversee daily pool operations, and uphold the Y safety standards. This hands-on leadership role combines supervision, program support, and direct guarding or instruction when needed.

The position requires current lifeguard, CPR/AED, First Aid, and other certifications, plus strong communication and scheduling skills. Evening/weekend availability is expected.

Qualifications

• Current Lifeguard certification.
• Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
• Current Oxygen Administration certification or ability to obtain within 30 days.
• Current Lifeguard Instructor certification or ability to obtain within 60 days.
• Current Pool Operator certification.
• Ability to pass Y swim test.
• Ability to perform essential duties of supervised roles.
• Two years YMCA/aquatics or related program experience preferred.
• Previous supervisory or team-lead experience preferred.
• Strong communication, customer-service, organization, and computer skills.
• Ability to work with diverse backgrounds and communities.
• Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends.
• Complete required new-associate training, including Child Abuse Prevention, before first shift.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily leadership and support to lifeguards and swim instructors.
• Assist with scheduling, coverage, coaching, and staff evaluations.
• Monitor pool operations and ensure safety standards compliance.
• Respond to emergencies, conflicts, and unusual situations.
• Lead or support in-service training and associate development.
• Maintain rosters, enrollment information, and incident reports.
• Communicate professionally with members, participants, parents, and staff.
• Coordinate pool space, equipment, and resources for lessons and events.
• Promote aquatic programs and member participation.
