DEFINITION

The Head Lifeguard is responsible for the safety and satisfaction of pool patrons through quality customer service, enforcement of pool rules and regulations, and assistance with general pool maintenance. They oversee and participate in the provision of lifeguarding services at the City aquatics facility and related work, both apparent and assigned. The work consists of related supervisory and lifeguarding duties. Work under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Skills in customer service, public relations, and problem solving are key components to success in this position. The need to respond to emergency incidents adds to the position's complexity. Success in this role contributes to the safety of patrons. This is a seasonal position with no benefits.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Receives direction from the Pool Supervisor and the Director of Parks and Recreation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the safety and satisfaction of pool patrons, including:
    • Knowing proper emergency procedures and implementing them at all times.
    • Providing emergency assistance such as rescue or first aid as needed.
    • Adhering to risk management and safety practices outlined by the City.
    • Enforcing pool rules and regulations.
    • Maintaining order and discipline among all participants.
    • Keeping lifesaving, first aid, and swimming equipment in good repair and ready for use.
  • Performing and overseeing daily custodial and maintenance duties to ensure a safe, clean aquatic facility.
  • Providing excellent customer service.
  • Supervising pool staff and lifeguards effectively.
  • Assisting with clerical duties and pool/staff scheduling as needed.
  • Training lifeguards regularly.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge Of

  • Operations, services, and activities of a swimming pool.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • CPR and general life-saving techniques.
  • English language skills.
  • Pertinent laws, codes, and regulations.

Ability To

  • Use life-preserving equipment accurately.
  • Handle and balance a cash drawer.
  • Interpret and apply policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work flexible schedule, Tuesday through Sunday.
  • Work independently without supervision.
  • Follow safety rules and regulations.
  • Enforce policies and procedures.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Establish effective working relationships.
  • Lead and motivate others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training, and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • At least one year of lifeguard experience; supervisory experience preferred.

Licenses and Certificates

  • Valid certifications prior to appointment:
    • Red Cross or equivalent Lifeguard
    • CPR/First Aid
    • AED
    • Lifeguard Training Instructor (LGI)
