Job summary

University of Maryland Faculty Physicians, Inc. seeks an experienced professional to oversee the draw site operations in an ambulatory laboratory setting, including inventory management, phlebotomy, and patient registration.

The role trains new staff, ensures accurate scheduling and payer information, and supports revenue cycle activities such as payments and pre-authorization, while upholding CAP/UMPA guidelines.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Completion of an accredited program in Phlebotomy.
  • At least 5 years of Phlebotomy experience.
  • 5+ years of medical office experience.
  • General understanding of basic accounting principles.
  • Proficiency with PCs.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Accurate data entry skills.
  • Knowledge of payer requirements for referrals and pre-authorization.
  • Knowledge of computerized billing systems.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge of payer contracts, policies and best practices.
  • Manages provider schedules and schedules appointments and communicates patient responsibilities.
  • Handles cash collection and patient payments in accordance with policies.
  • Understands and supports revenue cycle related to patient encounters and demographics/insurance verification.
  • Observes applicable policies and promotes positive guest relations.
  • Verifies that requisitions match specimen labels.
  • Ensures CAP and UMPA guidelines are followed during phlebotomy procedures.

Job description

Oversees the daily operations of the draw site; oversees inventory management; trains new personnel; performs various front desk and phlebotomy duties in an ambulatory laboratory setting including such functions as complete demographic and insurance registration, scheduling patients and/or verifying insurance information, phlebotomy specimen collection and quality checks of samples. Must be fully certified in patient registration and phlebotomy; and other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions
  • Oversees the daily operations of the draw site and oversees inventory management.
  • Trains new employees on the correct departmental procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of FPI and its practices, including payer contracts, policies and best practices.
  • Exhibits mid-level of skill in managing provider schedules and scheduling appointments accurately and effectively, including communicating patient responsibilities (obtaining a referral, bringing a co-pay, presenting identification and an insurance card at check in) and other events as part of the practice pre-visit activities.
  • Demonstrates the ability and understanding of FPI policy for cash collection and patient encounter, including collecting co-payments, outstanding balances and posting accurately and efficiently in GE Front Desk Credit Card Module.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of the revenue cycle as it relates to patient encounters and obtaining/verifying patient demographic and insurance information in order to receive payment for services rendered.
  • Observes and applies relevant FPI and departmental policies and procedures. Observes and promotes positive guest relations. Demonstrates courtesy and open communications with patients and referral sources.
  • Confirms all written orders on the requisition match specimen label.
  • Ensures CAP and UMPA guidelines are followed during a phlebotomy procedures.
Education And/or Experience
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred
  • Completion of an accredited program in Phlebotomy
  • At least 5 years of Phlebotomy experience
  • 5 or more years medical office experience
  • General understanding and application of basic accounting principles
  • PC proficiency
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Accurate data entry skills
  • Current knowledge of payer requirements for referrals and pre-authorization
  • Knowledge of computerized billing system

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland's Faculty Physician's Inc. salary range for this position. Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor and span of control, education/training and other qualifications.
