Description:

The Lead HVAC/Fire Protection Technician is responsible for assisting and overseeing fire protection inspection and testing by conducting regular inspections and functional tests of fire alarms, sprinklers, and other systems to ensure systems remain operational. Manages repair schedules and preventative maintenance for fire protection systems and helps to maintain records of inspections, tests, and repairs for compliance purposes. Assists with emergency system activations and evaluates system performance during drills or real emergencies, coordinating troubleshooting and system adjustments after activations. Assists with compliance monitoring and works to ensure that fire protection systems adhere to NFPA standards and other applicable codes. Provides operational checks of on-line HVAC equipment and preventative maintenance to ensure functionality and reliability of systems. Works on Central Plant equipment, motors, pumps, AHU's, vacuum pumps, compressors and water treatment systems with minimal supervision.

Evening Shift Schedule; 2:30pm-1:00am

Duties:

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs fire alarm devices, panels and related equipment.
  • Makes repairs to building HVAC systems, rebuilds pumps, replaces shaft bearings, etc.
  • Monitors the building fire protections and automation systems for alarms and trouble calls.
  • Performs preventative maintenance procedures to fire protection and HVAC equipment in accordance to established schedules.
  • Completes equipment inspection logs, visually monitors operation and status of fire protection and HVAC systems.
  • Responds to hot and cold calls from all campus locations, makes adjustments of repairs as required.
  • Checks to ensure correct water treatment protocol for all cooling tower and closed loop systems.
  • Provides supervision to crew on assigned shift providing quality assurance to completed jobs. Provides training to employees as needed.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment by sweeping, mopping and painting, and performs related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma or GED plus two years of education beyond high school in college or technical school.
  2. Ten years maintenance and repair experience for HVAC and fire safety systems, such as alarms, sprinkler, specialty, or other systems with 5 years of experience overseeing these systems.
  3. EPA Certification (Universal)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Seven years experience in fire safety and/or HVAC in a university or school system setting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledgeable in NFPA regulation with training coursework.
  • Knowledge of HVAC operations, repairs, and preventative maintenance for HVAC systems, pumps, shafts, boilers, chillers, and other HVAC equipment.
  • Knowledge of fire safety system operations, repairs, and preventative maintenance for alarm devices, fire suppression systems, alarm systems, and other fire safety systems and equipment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of alarms and trouble calls for building fire and automation systems.
  • Skills in using blueprints of electrical layouts and building plans for alarm devices and related equipment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with and coordinate contractors to service fire suppression systems, alarm systems, and other fire safety systems.
  • Ability to conduct inspections and tests of installed fire protection systems.
  • Ability to efficiently manage a crew by assigning jobs and ensuring that the work is done adequately.
  • Ability to implement and enforce safety methods and requirements.
