Job summary

Penn Medicine is seeking a Lead Histotechnologist for the 2nd shift in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The role involves performing technical histology procedures, supervising workflow, and ensuring quality and compliance in a high-volume clinical laboratory.

The ideal candidate has substantial Histology/IHC experience, ASCP credentials, and CLIA high-complexity testing eligibility, with leadership capabilities to guide staff and troubleshoot issues.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science in Histotechnology or other biological or chemical science or U.S. equivalent (substantiated by foreign credential evaluation statement)
  • Master of Arts or Science in Science or Management (Preferred)
  • Qualified to perform high-complexity testing per the CLIA (Required)
  • 5+ years of Histology/Immunohistochemistry experience at UPHS or equivalent (Required)
  • Prior LIS/Penn Chart experience (Preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of technical procedures that create microscopic slide preparations including Specimen Collection/Triage, Gross Tissue Description and Dissection, Routine Tissue Processing, Decalcification, Tissue Embedding, Microtomy Techniques, Routine and Special Staining, Frozen Section Techniques, and Special Specimen Preparation (EM, IF, IH, etc)
  • Evaluates and maintains procedures to ensure timely and consistent lab output; investigates new procedures; operates and maintains instrumentation; maintains records; supports quality improvement
  • Leads selected duties; may assume a management role in orientation, training and evaluation of new employees; ensures staffing coverage across three shifts, weekends, and holidays
  • Maintains confidentiality of laboratory work and findings; manages documentation for procedures and instrument performance; communicates effectively; adapts to changing environments to optimize lab performance

Education

Bachelor of Arts or Science in Histotechnology or other biological or chemical science
Master of Arts or Science in Science or Management (Preferred)
Qualified to perform high-complexity testing per CLIA (Required)
5+ years of Histology/Immunohistochemistry experience (Required)
Prior LIS/Penn Chart experience (Preferred)
