Job summary

Caraa is building an ambitious Sequencing AI platform in the US, combining bioinformatics with modern AI and backend engineering. As a Senior AI Bioinformatics Engineer, you will craft distributed services, genomic reasoning engines, and retrieval systems to enable AI to interpret genes, variants, diseases, and literature at scale.

You’ll join a team of senior engineers, applying deep genome sequencing expertise to production systems, ensuring correctness, performance, and reliability.

Qualifications

• 5+ years designing, building, and operating production backend systems at scale.
• Expert-level TypeScript with experience owning production services end to end.
• Strong distributed systems fundamentals and reliability.
• Hands-on experience with Spark and large datasets.
• Deep experience with high-performance data architectures (PostgreSQL, DuckDB, Redis).
• Experience with event-driven architectures (SQS, RabbitMQ, BullMQ).
• Production AI systems design including retrieval architectures, vector databases, LLM APIs.

Responsibilities

• Design and build the production AI systems powering Sequencing AI.
• Develop distributed backend services, genomic reasoning engines, and retrieval systems.
• Serve as the bioinformatics expert on the AI Team shaping genomic knowledge representation.
• Design how AI represents, retrieves, and reasons over genomic data to deliver accurate, explainable responses.
• Build scalable services enabling AI to reason over genes, variants, diseases, medications, and literature.
• Design high-performance data models and storage across PostgreSQL, Qdrant, Redis, DuckDB, Spark.
• Develop guardrails for scientifically accurate, explainable AI.
• Collaborate with Senior Backend Engineers and Bioinformatics team to integrate genomic knowledge.
• Continuously improve platform’s scientific accuracy and capabilities.
