Job summary

Fathoms, a defense technology company building Brilliant Machines, seeks a Lead Design Engineer for the Fathom5 line in Austin. This hands-on role requires CAD to prototype assembly and lab testing to develop disruptive gearbox prototypes for industrial automation.

You will design components, integrate hardware with software, and document design decisions while collaborating across teams. 5–10 years in engineering, a BS in Engineering, and a proven track record as an inventor or lead designer on

Qualifications

• Hands-on design experience from CAD to prototype assembly and lab testing.
• Inventor on US patent or equivalent leadership in gearbox design.
• Proficiency with CAD tools for precision mechanical design.
• Hands-on prototype assembly and testing in a lab.
• Strong written and verbal communication of technical findings.
• Ability to learn new technologies quickly.
• Team-first mentality with startup stamina.

Responsibilities

• Assist senior engineers with CAD modeling, product prototyping, and testing
• Design, procure, and/or print machine components including prime movers, instruments, controls, and machined/printed parts
• Support the engineering team in designing industrial automation solutions
• Prepare documentation of key product decisions and design changes
• Work with software and electrical engineers to integrate new technologies into actuators
• Translate client desires into tangible deliverables
• Test products for functionality
• Assemble hardware according to design specifications and ensure on-time delivery
• Contribute to company meetings, stand-ups, and demo days
• Learn product line and propose improvements
• Collaborate cross-functionally to merge assembly, hardware and software integration
