Job summary

The Harris County Flood Control District is seeking a Safety Inspector III to independently conduct safety inspections and provide technical leadership, mentorship, and quality assurance across County construction projects, maintenance activities, and facilities.

The role focuses on identifying hazards, ensuring compliance with OSHA standards and District safety programs, and reporting deficiencies with follow-up actions. Strong communication and mentorship skills are essential for success.

Qualifications

• Requires six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in construction safety, construction inspection, occupational safety, EHS, heavy civil construction, public works, infrastructure, or related field.
• At least three (3) years of required experience must involve direct construction safety inspection, compliance, or contractor safety oversight.
• Extensive experience interpreting and applying OSHA construction standards, safety policies, and contractual safety requirements.

Responsibilities

• Conduct routine, random, and scheduled inspections of County construction projects, maintenance activities, and facilities to identify hazards and verify compliance with safety requirements.
• Use the Universal Site Inspection Checklist and procedures to evaluate worksite conditions.
• Verify compliance with OSHA standards, contractual safety requirements, and safe work practices.
• Observe activities, identify hazards, unsafe conditions, and safety violations.
• Review contractor safety documentation and records; report serious hazards to senior safety personnel.
• Communicate deficiencies to contractors and District personnel; document non-compliant conditions.
• Assist with follow-up inspections and escalation of unresolved safety issues.
• Provide mentorship and technical guidance to Safety Inspector I and II staff; onboarding and training.
