Lead Electrical Test Technician (USA, Fontana, CA)
Reporting to the Electrical Engineering Assistant Manager, the Lead Electrical Test Technician leads a team of employees in completing electrical testing of manufactured projects. The role also includes performing complex electrical testing of products during the manufacturing process based on established testing procedures.
Typical Day
- Oversees the work of assigned team employees.
- Addresses minor discipline problems with team members and refers more serious cases to the supervisor.
- Assists with the planning and preparation of training for new team members.
- Collaborates with team members to discuss upcoming work assignments and delegates assignments based on team members’ skills and experience.
- Assists team members with technical issues or advanced problems with given assignments.
- Partners with supervisor or engineering manager to resolve any issues that arise within the department.
- Monitors testing status daily and gathers feedback from all test technicians.
- Follows AC/DC schematics and wiring diagrams to perform testing of main electrical distribution AC/DC systems for power distribution control houses and panels.
- Works closely with engineering and production team members to ensure accurate, efficient and timely execution of required testing work.
- Troubleshoots assembly, wiring and testing problems.
- Performs full functional testing on various circuits including HVAC system, lighting, receptacles, fans, fire alarm systems, battery system, and meggering of cables.
- Performs testing including current/voltage injections, Hi‑Potential Testing, I/O checks and circuit breaker simulation testing on relay panels and switchgear.
- Performs Factory Acceptance Testing with the customer as required.
- Performs customer site visits to troubleshoot and resolve any field issues that may arise.
- Drafts detailed technical reports to present findings and recommends modifications needed to correct production problems.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent; associate’s degree in electrical engineering or related field required. Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
- At least 4 years of experience in power distribution electrical testing or related field.
- Relevant experience leading a team.
- Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics and single‑line diagrams.
- Knowledge of testing three‑phase AC and DC control circuits.
- Knowledge of testing protection relays and switchgear.
- Knowledge of power distribution, breakers, current and potential transformers, protection relays, and switchgear.
- Familiar with protection relay software such as Schweitzer, AcSELerator and GE Enervista UR.
- Good working knowledge of standard electrical testing and measuring equipment.
- Knowledge of Electrical Safety Procedures and NEC codes.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to discuss product flaws constructively and positively.

- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software to prepare test reports and proposals.
Physical Requirements
- Periods of standing, walking, and sitting at a desk using a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds at a time.
- Must be able to traverse the production facility to complete testing.
- Ability to travel to customer sites when necessary.
- Must wear PPE, such as gloves, safety glasses, hard hat, and ear protection, while working on the production floor.
