Position Summary:
The Lead Driver is responsible for all CDL driving needs (28’ dry Vans, primarily hauling them
as Doubles) as required to complete their daily tasks along with additional responsibilities
pertaining to fleet management, load quality and inspection. This position will be the site’s
independent point of contact for the logistics department and the company, taking the
necessary action on daily/weekly prioritized tasks for our continued success.
The weekly schedule for this role will be scheduled for a minimum of 40 hours/week working
primarily Monday-Friday. This position is hourly, and it is estimated that 80% of the total
hours will be scheduled behind the wheel and 20% will be scheduled elsewhere to
accomplish our other needs/goals. This will include plant operations, asset inspection and
cleanliness, and other hauls as needed for Divert. Overtime will be expected as necessary to
protect the business from any disruption.
The position reports to the Transportation Manager but will work closely with
Rockwood’s site personnel to receive up to date information to prioritize the daily direction as
needed.
Responsibilities:
Assure Divert Logistics and the Rockwood facility are performing as efficiently as possible
and all Divert’s customers are being serviced per our standards:
- Point of contact for Logistics items/follow-ups to properly prioritize and communicate.
- Including but not limited to: Truck/trailer repairs, truck/trailer cleanliness, schedule efficiency, outlet issues, etc.
- As a Class A CDL driver, pick-up and drop off dry van trailers (Doubles and 53’ trailers as needed) at a minimum of two client locations.
- Additional driving tasks such as End Dump and Tanker hauling could be incorporated into the needs of the company at later date/times. Rollout of this additional work to be discussed between Divert and employee when applicable.
- Serve as an inspector for the load, ensuring a clean product (bins and trailers are properly cleaned by a third party at the site) is delivered back to our customers.
- Repair necessary bin components for the customer(s) to receive proper, functional bins to use for the program.
- Find and work with Third Party Logistics (3PL) companies to cover vacation and other excess hours.
- Implement new processes to continue improving Logistic Safety practices (i.e. Trainings, PPE, SOPs, Near Misses, Weekly Topics, etc.)
- Implement Logistics Procedures and partner with the Rockwood personnel to conduct specific, necessary follow-ups to ensure these processes are being followed.
- Lead the planning and execution of Planned and Reactive Maintenance items for our assets, including completing some reasonable maintenance repairs internally.
- As necessary, execute the necessary Training procedures and/or certification for drivers needed for the Logistics Department to meet FMCSA requirements and develop our team members.
- Perform weekly/daily Logistic dispatching needs and communicate to all necessary personnel, including Divert employees and our customers.
- Also includes coordinating and/or performing any backhauling opportunities.
- Ensure all necessary trailer movements are completed to increase Operations labor utilization and reduce as much traffic outside the facility as possible.
- Properly manage the needs of the logistics assets in order for them to stay in good condition (i.e. Truck cleaning inside/outside, dry van trailer cleaning, etc.)
Perform the necessary CDL Class A driving needs for the company.
- Comply with all DOT, FMCSA and in-house regulations, rules and policies.
- Complete a daily truck log via Electronic Logging Device (ELD) to record reports of mileage covered at the end of each day.
- Complete daily inspections of the vehicle(s) at the beginning (pre-trip) and end (post- trip) of the shift via ELD and report any problems or damage to management.
- Adequately perform all the physical functions necessary of a truck driver (e.g. connecting/disconnecting air and electrical lines, ensure landing gear is set, ensure trailer king pin is engaged to truck, etc.) to ensure any trailer loads/cargo are safely transported.
- Install tire chains as necessary/required per DOT or state requirements dependent on the weather.
- Complete all necessary trailer swaps, all trailer types at the facility, to optimize business operations.
- Conduct daily, open communication with Divert Logistics and Operations team members before departing from our facility each day to ensure alignment between departments to not cause any business disruption.
- Retrieve and turn in all necessary paperwork (e.g. Outgoing BOL, Incoming BOL, etc.) to the proper team members/Customer at the given Origin/Destination.
- Fuel the tractors as necessary to get to and from each Origin/Destination via the Fuel Card supplied by the company. In an emergency, or certain unforeseen situation(s), personal payment method for fuel is acceptable if needed but management needs to be contacted for approval and all receipts should be saved for proper reimbursement.
- Observe and report equipment or mechanical failures immediately.
- Manage routes and routines so they proceed in the most efficient way possible.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Class A CDL required
- Minimum of 3 years Experience in a driver position
- Mechanical aptitude and Experience with the following mechanical duties is required: DOT preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting/repair of electric/pneumatic/hydraulic/mechanical systems and components.
- Experience in transportation operations is highly preferred
- Trailer (tanker) hauling experience and endorsement required
- Doubles/Triples hauling experience and endorsement required
- Willing to perform multiple hauls/routes depending on what the current business needs are
- Willing to complete overnight hauls on occasion / as needed depending on business needs
- Willing to perform duties occasionally that are outside of the scope of just driving work – example using a forklift
